I think as a British martial arts fan, my opinion of Michael Bisping is that of a pioneer and all time legend, unfortunately due to his role as the heel and his short comings before the USADA days, the rest of the world doesn’t pay him the respect he deserves. We can’t forget of course that he has got more victories inside the octagon than any other fighter, a victory over Anderson Silva and is the champion, after a first round destruction of Luke Rockhold.
Now people were also very disrespectful of a multiple time world champion at multiple weight classes, when speaking about Bispings first title defence over Dan Henderson. Unfortunately the disrespect for Bisping extends to his opponents, his upcoming fight with GSP soon approaches, I am hearing already the mumblings that GSP isn’t a middleweight and that this isn’t a proper title defence.
As a Bisping fan I feel the need to express that he did accept a fight against the winner of Whittaker v Romero. I also remind you all that we use to fantasise about GSP fighting Anderson Silva at middleweight for the title.
So let’s look at the records set in the careers of Michael Bisping and George St Pierre, remind ourselves how this is two of the all time greats.
• Bisping most fights in UFC history (tied first until UFC 217)
• Most fights won #1 Bisping (20) GSP #2(19)
• Most KO’s #4 Bisping (10)
• Most decisions #5 Bisping (10)
• Striking on feet #1 Bisping (1533) #3 GSP (1254)
• Takedowns #1 GSP (87)
• Attendance records #2/5 GSP (55,724/23,152)
I think given the fact that the UFC has reined as the top promotion holding the highest talent for nearly 20 years, the fact that both these fighters are in the main event of the biggest event of the year is completely justified by the records and the history.
History is something the UFC must nurture too, given the fact the sport is still young, it is essential that we recognise the pioneers who are still active and especially if they are still competitive and able to hold and defend the title. In my opinion both of these fighters are capable of unifying the title against Robert whittaker , that’s not to say they will, however they certainly have the capability. If we get behind this fight it could be a celebration of arguably the greatest British martial artist of all times career.
This victory for Bisping would be a major accomplishment. Before the days of Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor. Four years ago in 2013, I remember as I’m sure you do. A press conference was held were GSP retired. Lots of people were asking Dana white where the next stars were coming from, how will the UFC Survive. GSP is a major superstar and people have slept on this in the last four years. He was on a 9 fight winning streak when he choose to retire. He was the champion who had conquered a division that many regarded as the strongest in the UFC.
Not to mention he would be a sole occupier of the record for most victories and most fights in the history of the UFC. Michael Bisping in my opinion should be shown a lot more respect and should be a folk hero in the UK. Throughout the MMA community he is, but hopefully when he beats GSP, we can start to discuss Michael Bisping as potentially the greatest fighter in UFC history. From the ultimate fighter to current UFC Middleweight Champion. Another victory over another all time great can only push him further towards that.
So as the MMAUK network let’s spread the word that two of the best of all time are fighting this Saturday and let the world know how good Bisping is and let’s throw our support behind Bisping like we would Antony Joshua or Tyson Fury.
