03 Jan Michael Johnson vs Darren Elkins – One To Watch
At UFC Fight Night 124, two warriors collide in Michael ‘The Menace’ Johnson and Darren ‘The Damage’ Elkins. Johnson is making his debut in the featherweight division and wanted a top ten opponent, and the UFC granted his wish.
Johnson has had a very hit and miss career so far in the UFC. Losing four of his last five fights is far from ideal but explains the decision for him to move down to featherweight division.
Beating fighters like Dustin Poirer, Edson Barboza, Joe Lauzon and Tony Ferguson – Johnson has proved his more than capable of beating anyone on his night. His last fight was against Justin Gaethje in one of the fights of the year which he lost but put in a performance that will be remembered for years to come.
Elkins is on a five-fight win streak and is looking to make it six against ‘The Menace’. Elkins is famous for digging deep and being as tough as they come. No matter how badly Elkins is hurt, you can never count him out of a fight. His fight back in March at UFC 209 was one of the most impressive things I have ever witnessed.
For two and a half rounds Mirsad Bektic was imposing his will against Elkins, dominating the fight on the feet, in the clinch and on the floor. Then Elkins had enough; he landed a Mirko Cro Cop styled head-kick that shut off Bektic’s brain leaving Elkins victorious.
We don’t know how this fight will play out, but one thing is sure this will be a fight not to be missed.
Will Elkins make it six consecutive wins? Or will Johnson defeat a top 10 contender in his first fight in the featherweight division? Who knows? I know one thing though. You’d be a fool to miss it.
