Molly McCann and Bryony Tyrell battle for champion status at CW90

The first ever Cage Warriors Women’s Flyweight Title is on the line onFebruary 24th, when Liverpool’s Molly McCann faces Bryony Tyrell at the Echo Arena.

There’s been a lot of hype surrounding Women’s Flyweights heading into 2018. With the UFC’s newly formed 125lb division on the rise, fight fans and promotions alike are keeping their eyes on female fighters around the world, waiting for the next generation of stars to emerge. On February 24th, Cage Warriors will crown a new flyweight queen of Europe for the very first time.

Molly McCann (6-1) is fast becoming one of the most exciting new faces in women’s MMA. Voted by the fans as Cage Warriors Fighter of the Year 2017 and currently on a 5 fight winning streak, she’s the number 2 ranked female pound-for-pound fighter in the UK and Ireland and fights to make history for herself and her home city of Liverpool. “Everyone knows my style is a push the pace, stand up and come forward,” says McCann. “The Echo crowd is like something I’ve never experienced. I genuinely believe scouse fighters and fight fans are the best in the world.” If she’s victorious, McCann will become the first ever North West female Mixed Martial Arts World Champion, a title which will prove her claim as one of the hottest prospects on the planet. So far, she’s kept a pace that none of her previous Cage Warriors opponents have been able to handle, and has punched her way to victory in some of the best back-and-forth wars the promotion has seen in years.

Rewind to 2014. Another rising star submits Molly McCann via armbar in a national grappling competition in Southampton. Her name is Bryony Tyrell.

Tyrell (4-1-1), fighting out of Southampton’s Exile Gym and managed by the UFC’s Jim Wallhead, has risen through the women’s MMA scene alongside McCann, with the two even training together as amateurs leading up to their bouts at Cage Warriors 68. On February 24th, they will meet across the octagon in a championship fight which is not only the biggest of their careers but a landmark event for Cage Warriors’ women’s divisions. On paper this looks to be a classic striker vs grappler match up, with Molly’s deadly striking arsenal coming up against Tyrell’s deadly submission game. “Many have underestimated me before and have been beaten on their own soil,” says Tyrell. “Liverpool may be in for a shock on February 24th.”

Joining McCann and Tyrell on the card is Liverpool’s own Lee Chadwick, who defends his world middleweight title against Germany’s Jonas Billstein in the second championship fight of the night. Paddy Pimblett, who returns to the octagon looking to make a statement and begin his climb back up to title contention, will also feature in a homecoming bout which looks to draw thousands of his delicate fanbase to the Echo Arena. A host of other Liverpool fighters fill the card, including Lawrence Fitzpatrick, Shawn Kenny and Adam Ventre, all stepping up on February 24th to ensure the home crowd don’t leave disappointed.

Tickets for Cage Warriors’ return to Liverpool can be bought from the Echo Arena here.
