David Price – “Every dog has its day.”

David Price and Alexander Povetkin will go to battle on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s attempt to further unify the heavyweight division against New Zealand’s Joseph Parker.

The 6’8 Liverpudlian has it all to do as an overwhelming underdog according to the odds makers. At the age of 34, we can only assume this is perhaps David Prices last chance at the big time.

After a scintillating beginning to his career during which he amassed a 15 – 0 record with 13 highlight reel knockouts, Price has failed to live up to his potential and struggled badly when asked to step up his competition. After suffering back-to-back knockout losses to American Tony Thompson, Price has looked a shadow of his former self, going on to suffer further knockout defeats to Erkan Teper (overturned to N/C) and most recently to Christian Hammer.

David Price has undoubtedly been a victim of boxing lax rules on drugs cheats. Both Tony Thompson and Erkan Teper failed drugs test in the aftermath of there KO victories over Price. Sanctions were small or non-existent. He now faces a man who again has failed a drugs test in Alexander Povetkin.

Despite these woes, Price is now just one fight away from re-establishing himself amongst the heavyweight elite. Alexander Povetkin provides the platform as the former WBA champion who is also currently considered the organisations number one contender. He is a formidable opponent, having only ever lost to Wladimir Klitschko and never been stopped he presents a mammoth obstacle on David Prices road to redemption.

During a recent interview with IFLTV Price declared. “Every dog has its day.” This Saturday will need to be exactly that for Price, he will need to put it all together in order to defeat the Russian who has fought and won at a much higher level, even earning a decision of Christian Hammer in his last outing, who handily dealt with Price just one fight prior.

Price possesses serious power in his right hand. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he detonates on Povetkin, shocks the world and throws himself into the Anthony Joshua sweep stakes.

An entire nation will be hoping Price can do just that. One of boxing‘s good guys he enjoys great support and it will be a considerable advantage on the night. However his underdog status is just, Alexander Povetkin is a overwhelming favourite based on his superior pedigree, impressive résumé and granite chin.

Boxing is famous for its great upsets, especially at heavyweight. Will we see another this weekend? Luckily we don’t have to wait much longer to find out.
