Rose Thorn: A rapid talent

Havering Jiu-Jitsu Academy, London – David Tobin (Black Belt) & Chris Cummings (Black Belt)

DeVante Johnson-Rose

Age: 26

“So, what got you into BJJ?” – Sean

“I was having a bad break up with my child’s mom, during this, I had a lot of free time, so I actually managed to stumble across a Jiu-Jitsu academy, and I managed to fall in love with it. I prefer Gi Jiu-Jitsu at this stage but I’m starting to fall in love with NoGi, the aim would be to earn the blue belt and make some changes in training to do more striking, I train some MMA, but an MMA bout is the long term goal.” – DeVante

“You’ve taken to the sport very quickly and have been successful very quickly, what do you credit this to?” – Sean

“I wish I trained at a younger age, so I feel like I push myself further than most people do. I train 3x a day, run 5k every day and I cycle 15 miles a day and I have a bodybuilding background so those are things that probably transition well. I come from a very athletic background and I try to emulate that, and I feel like all of those things combined probably assist me in my development in grappling training. The team I train with are phenomenal for me and are great people.” – DeVante

“What’s the long-term goals for you and your training then?” – Sean

“The Ultimate Fighting Championship would be my long-term goal. I reckon my muscle mass would decrease if I did a weight cut, I could make Light Heavyweight. However, at Heavyweight I feel like I would have more potential due to the older age the competitors are at and at 26 it would position me to be by far one of the more youthful competitors in the Heavyweight division giving me a much greater chance and longevity to achieve the goals that I have set for myself in a competitive nature.”

“Anything else you’d like to say?” – Sean

“Big goals, want to thank my teammates, friends and family for all of their support, for people interested in my development check out my Instagram.” – DeVante (https://www.instagram.com/damagetheboss/?hl=en)
