Fighters At A Glance: Stipe Miocic

In the latest instalment of Fighters At A Glance is about Stipe Miocic. Today we are going to be looking at the current UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic and his UFC career to date.

Stipe has competed in the UFC longer than people might think having made his promotional debut way back in 2011 defeating Joey Beltran at UFC 136. Miocic then went on to fight three times the following year in 2012. His first bout of the year was against Phillip De Fries and Stipe won that fight via knockout in the first round. His second bout of the year came in May where he came up against Shane Del Rosario at UFC 146 and he won that fight via knockout again but this time in the second round. Stipe’s final fight of the year came in December against Stefan Struve. However when Stipe came up against the giant that is Struve he suffered his first UFC loss and his first-ever pro-MMA loss. Stipe lost that fight via knockout in the second round.

After his first defeat, Stipe enjoyed a three-fight winning streak defeating Roy Nelson, Gabriel Gonzaga and Fabio Maldonado. During them three fights he had two unanimous decision victory and a knockout win. Miocic then endured another loss this time at the hands of Junior Dos Santos. This fight took place at UFC: On FOX: Miocic Vs Dos Santos, unfortunately, Stipe lost this fight via unanimous decision.

After that Stipe fought Mark Hunt and Andrei Arlovski in May 2015 and January 2016 respectively. After those two fights, Miocic got his first title shot against Fabricio Werdum and Stipe took full opportunity of this fight opportunity by knocking Werdum out in the first round.

Stipe then became the man who had the most UFC Heavyweight title defences in UFC history. Stipe fought and defeated Alistair Overeem, Junior Dos Santos and Francis Ngannou. Then Stipe came across a fighter who many believe is the goat of heavyweight MMA Daniel Cormier. This time Stipe lost viciously in the first round. But that was not the end of it after over a year out Miocic was given an immediate title shot and took full advantage and KO’d Cormier in the fourth round.

What is next for Stipe will there be a trilogy with Cormier or will the be a new challenger for the heavyweight strap? Only time will tell…
