Erick Silva is now a free agent

Erick Silva was once a red-hot prospect who looked a dead cert to enter the title picture in the UFC welterweight division. The Brazilian entered the UFC with an impressive MMA record of 12-1 (1) and was the inaugural Jungle Fight welterweight champion. Silva then 27 signed with the UFC and made his debut with the promotion in 2011 at UFC 134 with a 1st round stoppage of Luis Ramos in just 40 seconds. Silva lost his 2nd fight by DQ due to illegal punches to the back of the head, but that didn’t stop the hype train that much and a win over Charlie Brenneman again in the 1st round and the hype around Silva looked real. The former UFC title challenger Jon Fitch was next up, and despite losing on points in October 2012, it looked a case of too much too soon. But sadly for Silva and the UFC who no doubt was hopeful they would have a new Brazilian star on their hands, Silva never really progressed, and the remainder of his UFC career was a case of the odd win surrounded by more defeats. Silva got a win over a big name in Josh Koscheck in 2015, but every other time he was matched with someone around or in the top 10 he would seemingly lose. Defeats to the likes of Matt Brown, Neil Magny and Dong Hyun Kim told us exactly where Silva was, and all the hype looked seriously misplaced. Silva now has a 19-9 (1) record, he’s lost his last two fights, and four out of his last five and his overall record in the UFC is an average 7-8. Silva 33 is now a free agent, his current UFC contract expired after his last fight, a loss against Jordan Mein last December, and another contract with the UFC looks remote due to his poor recent run. However Silva will no doubt be picked up by another promotion, and he would be another useful addition to the Bellator welterweight ranks, but a career which promised so much, sadly didn’t really deliver.

Kris ‘Dez’ Edwards victorious at Cage Warriors 91

Welsh Bantamweight Kris ‘Dez’ Edwards looked better than ever last weekend in his second round stoppage over Gavin Kelly. Edwards (11-9) impressed the home crowd at the Newport Centre with his Knockout of the Irish man, in what is surely the biggest win of his career. It was a patient start from both fighters, with much of the first round spent clinched against the cage. Though it didn’t take long for Edwards to warm up. In the second he began to pick up the pace, moving forward aggressively and landing combinations of hard punches – the latter of which left Kelly unable to continue. “The last few years everyone has been saying to me, ‘let your hands go and show what you can do’” said Edwards in his post-fight interview. “I enjoyed that, it was nice to put on a good performance and showcase the level of skills I’ve got. It’s good to be back winning and building my career back up.” And that’s why fans love Kris Edwards. Despite suffering a string of losses, this down to earth character now seems to have found the form that once made him Wales’s top prospect. It’s not just that either. Much like his contemporaries at Tillery Combat, Jack Marshman and Josh Reed, Edwards always comes to put on a show. Whether by knockout or submission, you can be sure as long as he’s in there he is always looking to get a finish. So what’s next for the 28-year-old from Abertillery? With 3 back to back stoppage wins and a wealth of experience under his belt, this resurgent Kris Edwards will certainly move on to face a top ten contender. In such a talent-packed division there will be plenty for him to choose from. Who would you like to see Kris ‘Dez’ Edwards fight next? Have your say in the comments below

Will GSP v McGregor happen in 2018?

This past Monday on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani despite still suffering from the effects of ulcerative colitis GSP announced he has not closed the door on a future return to the UFC. GSP said he wants a fight that would enhance his legacy, so who could be a possible opponent for the two time UFC champion. St-Pierre now 36 and with an incredible MMA record of 26-2 really has no need to fight again, if he never fights again he has already done more than enough to be at least in the conversation for the greatest MMA fighter of all time. GSP returned from a near 4 year hiatus to claim his 2nd UFC career when he beat Michael Bisping at UFC 217 to capture the middleweight belt in November 2017. GSP vacated the middleweight title a week or so later, so is it now a case of who and where we see the Canadian next. St-Pierre has not ruled out competing at lightweight, welterweight or even a return to middleweight for any future bout. I would rule out another middleweight fight, despite beating Bisping he clearly isn’t a middleweight and really when he talks about a legacy fight I don’t see any names in the middleweight ranks that really fit what he calls a legacy fight. The Diaz brothers Nate and Nick are obvious contenders although GSP has seemingly ruled out both, Ben Askren was discussed on The MMA Hour, but Askren despite being unbeaten has never fought in the UFC, and GSP doesn’t think he has a big enough name, GSP had this to say about Askren: “He’s a guy who’s extremely, extremely talented, a very dangerous guy, but nobody knows who he is because he’s never been exposed to the public. But he’s very good. In order to have a fight with me, I would have liked him to be exposed to the public so his stock goes up, so if I fight him, at least it’s a win-win situation. Otherwise, you fight a guy who’s extremely dangerous who nobody cares about, who nobody knows who he is. It’s sad, but that’s the real way to look at it. And the reason why I’m saying that in your interview now is because I want people to be aware of who he is, I want him to have a chance to fight in the UFC, to go fight against the big dogs, the big boys of the sport, and I think he’s in certainly the top five, maybe the top three in the welterweight division.” So the only two names I can see that really tick all the boxes is the current Tyron Woodley the current UFC welterweight champion and Conor McGregor. Would a return to welterweight to do something he has already done before really tempt GSP, I have my doubts, which leaves McGregor, although GSP sees it more of a money fight when he said this on The MMA Hour. “I mean, money-wise, for people who are not huge fans of MMA, they know who Conor McGregor is. He’s the main guy. He’s the guy who brought the sport to a different level. He’s, I would say, the most charismatic guy. He sells, the biggest seller in the sport. But talk about legacy. If I come back for legacy, that’s what interests me the most, more than the money. Money, yes, it’s good, but if I come back, it would be more of a legacy match.” McGregor v GSP is the biggest fight the UFC can make right now, it would surely even tempt McGregor to finally return, GSP brings the name and the money. Despite what GSP says I would be astonished if this fight wasn’t at the very least discussed. In a year where the UFC wants the money fights, this is the biggest money fight of the lot, I would be surprised if we don’t see it happen in 2018.

Alistair Overeem vs. Curtis Blaydes announced for UFC 225 in Chicago

The UFC confirmed this week that Curtis Blaydes (10-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) will meet Alistair Overeem (43-16 MMA, 8-5 UFC) at UFC 225, taking place on June 9 at the United Centre in Chicago. No main event has been confirmed for UFC 225 but this fight will slot nicely onto the main card. HWs head to the @UnitedCenter❗️ Chicago's @RazorBlaydes265 continues his quest for UFC gold vs @AlistairOvereem. #UFC225 pic.twitter.com/C8QZXnIr9K — UFC (@ufc) March 7, 2018 Blaydes played it smart in his last outing, beating Mark Hunt with a unanimous decision over the seasoned veteran who throughout the fight looked to land that one punch and then walk away. However, Blaydes outwrestled Hunt, implementing his game-plan with ease, although not the most entertaining fight it got Blaydes what he wanted the #5 ranking and a fight with #2 Overeem in his hometown of Chicago. Blaydes only loss in the UFC is to Overeem’s previous opponent Francis Ngannou, every fight since we’ve seen a better version of Blaydes who at 25 still has a long career ahead of him. This will be his final fight on his current UFC contract so will be a great way for him to make a statement and look to recoup the financial rewards. Overeem hasn’t been a slouch either, riding a two-fight win streak until Ngannou knocked him out in devastating fashion. A highlight he would have undoubtedly seen over and over again if he watched the build-up to the Stipe Miocic vs. Ngannou fight. Looking for one more chance at gold and a rematch with Miocic, Overeem will have a lot to prove in his comeback fight.
