Canelo Alvarez rematch with Gennady Golovkin has been cancelled.
Alvarez, who has an upcoming hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission on April 18th to determine if he should be banned for a failed drug test, has decided to withdraw from the May 5th clash.
Alvarez failed two drug tests when traces of clenbuterol were found. This has been claimed by Alvarez and his team to have come from contaminated meat in Mexico. Alvarez has been temporarily suspended until the hearing on April 18th.
“I am truly shocked by what has happened and I lament this has caused people to have doubts about my integrity. I have always been a clean fighter,” Alvarez said in a prepared statement to reporters at his promoter’s office in Los Angeles.
It’s not known as yet if GGG will still fight on the 5th of May or wait until later in the year to face Alvarez again depending on length of a potential ban.
