Jones vs Gustafsson II set for UFC 232

Jon Jones is to rematch Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232. The event will take place December 29, 2018, at the T-Mobile arena Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fight will see the two men compete for the Light Heavyweight belt, which has seemingly been stripped from current champion, Daniel Cormier. Cormier is scheduled to defend his more recently acquired Heavyweight strap at UFC 230 next month and with very loud talk of retirement, it appears the company have taken the bold step of stripping Cormier of one of his titles and giving his longtime foe the chance to compete for it.

UFC 232 will see one of the most eagerly anticipated rematches ever. The first contest was arguably the best fight in the division’s history as Jones and Gustafsson went to war over five rounds. The previously untouchable Jones was pushed to his limit by ‘The Mauler’ who surprised the young champion with excellent wrestling, striking and a true desire to win. Jones proved his championship status at UFC 165, ultimately picking up the decision victory over Gustafsson.

Jon Jones’ ascendancy to GOAT status has faltered since the 2013 match up with Gustaffson. A whole host of well documented personal and professional problems have limited Jones to just four fights. The most recent has seen the 31-year-old, New Yorker sidelined for 15 months for a doping violation and stripped of his title for the third time in the aftermath of the biggest win of his career, the knockout victory of Daniel Cormier.

Jones was believed to be facing a four-year suspension from USADA but his “delivery of substantial assistance” to the anti-doping agency saw him face a retroactive 15-month suspension which cleared the way for his comeback far quicker than anyone expected.

Now free to resume his career Jones will quickly look to regain the belt he never lost in the competition. His dominance in the octagon is undeniable and is reinforced by the bookmakers who gave him a nearly 3-1 favourite over Gustaffson. ‘The Mauler’ is the man who has previously provided the stiffest of tests for Jones and will surely be seeking revenge in this long-awaited rematch.
