AFL 19: Night of Champions takes place this Saturday, March 30 in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain and is arguably the biggest fight card in the promotion’s history. No less than five title fights top the bill involving some of Spain’s best talent along with a whole host of top international talent.
The main event sees Spain’s Daniel Requeijo (14-7) return to the promotion for the first time since AFL 14. The fan favourite has fought for Cage Warriors, Combate Americas, Pancrase, and Superior FC during his storied career and now returns home to AFL with his sights on becoming the featherweight champion but first must get past French veteran Nicolas Joannes (17-14), a very experienced and well-rounded fighter.
Light heavyweight champion Darwin Rodriguez (7-4) faces a stern test in his first title defence in the co-main event when he faces Brazilian UFC veteran Amilcar Alves (18-16). The 26-year-old came into his own in 2018 going 3-0 and started 2019 with another win. Now on a four-fight-win-streak, all TKO wins, he has emerged as one of the best light heavyweights in Spain but is up against a true veteran in Alves, who has competed all over the world from the UFC to M-1 to Road FC. This fight is a proper youth vs. experience match-up.
The other title fights include the rubber match between Thiago Martins (18-10) and Zebenzui Ruiz (7-3) for the vacant bantamweight title, an extremely high-level flyweight title bout between Raymison Bruno (11-1) and Kevin Cordero (7-2), and Lionel Padilla (5-1) returns to face Serbian veteran Dragan Pesic (17-16) for the vacant super lightweight title.
Elsewhere on the card we see the long-anticipated return of popular Spanish fighter Acoidan Duque (10-2). After over three years away he returns to face KSW & Cage Warriors veteran Konrad Iwanowski (7-3) who is based out of SBG Swords in Dublin, Ireland. Undefeated fighters Jose Sanchez (6-0), Eris Dano (3-0), and Jamie Lester (3-0-1), as well as Sebas Santana (5-1), will also be in action on the night.
