Darren Till is set to fight Italian Marvin Vettori at UFC Fight Night 189 on April 10th, 2021. It will be the Liverpudlian’s first bout since he lost to Robert Whittaker last year. As UFC fans will recognize, Marvin Vettori is no slouch either and has a very accomplished record himself. In fact, he is the only man to have ever taken the distinguished Israel Adesanya to a spit decision. Whilst Adesanya can make light work of many fighters, this certainly wasn’t the case against Vettori with some fans even believing the Italian should have taken the victory.
In terms of previous records, Till’s stands at 18-3 whereas Vettori’s is at 16-4. Crucially however, Till has lost 3 out of his last four fights, whereas Vettori comes off the back of a 4 match win-steak. Not only this but Vettori’s last win was in December 2020, meaning ring-rust will not be an issue for him. With this in mind, it’s set for quite a close fight – albeit the bookies still have the charismatic scouser Till as the favourite to taste victory. Perhaps the reason for this is although his recent record is sketchy, he has arguably faced tougher opponents when compared to Vettori.
Looking closer at the fight, it could go either and is also something of a style clash. For instance, out of Till’s 18 wins, only 2 are by submission, his last coming in 2014. This is in stark contrast to Vettori who has a good submission record. Of his 16 wins, 9 have been by submission with his last being a rear naked choke in 2020. This means that Till will have to have his wits about him when facing Vettori who is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Regardless of who wins, it’s set to be an interesting fight. Usually, when Till is involved, you’re set for fireworks. Not only is he exciting to watch in the octagon, but he’s also become known for his entertaining trash talk and signature victory speech in Portuguese after winning. Elsewhere, the powerful Vettori is equally as captivating in the cage which means UFC fans are set for a cracker in April.
