A professional mixed martial artist since May 2010 and representing Alliance MMA, Matt Van Buren owns a 7-6 record through 13 professional bouts comprised of three decisions, two submissions, and two knockouts. Van Buren has fought for multiple promotions over the course of his journey thus far as a pro-MMA fighter including Bellator MMA. He has finished four out of his seven victories during his time in the professional ranks so far. Van Buren appeared on The Ultimate Fighter season 19 as a member of Team Edgar in 2014.

In his MMA debut, he faced Manny Okorie and went on to defeat him via majority decision. Van Buren also defeated his next two foes in Brandon Saling and Aaron Johnson. Then in his promotional debut with Bellator MMA at Bellator 52, he defeated Nick Nichols via TKO in the second round. Van Buren tapped out Shawn Levesque in the first round via rear-naked choke at Bellator 57. He defeated Mojtaba Najim Wali via unanimous decision. In 2014, Van Buren was selected to be a part of The Ultimate Fighter season 19 cast at light heavyweight. He defeated Daniel Vizcaya via TKO in the first round and was the third light heavyweight pick of team Edgar. He defeated Chris Fields via majority decision on episode nine to advance to the semi-finals. In episode 12, Van Buren defeated Dan Spohn via TKO in the second round to advance to the final. Following his two-fight stint with the UFC, he submitted Derrick Weaver via arm-triangle choke in round two at Elite Warriors Challenge 9 Takeover. The victory earned Van Buren the second submission win of his professional career.
