Oscar Ownsworth – “Mike is a good solid opponent”

Oscar ‘Ginger Fury’ Ownsworth 4-2-1 is an English professional Mixed Martial Artist currently competing in the Lightweight division, representing AVT Leeds. He has competed for Caged Steel, Bad Mofo MMA, Cage Warriors, Evolution of Combat and Almighty Fighting Championship.

I’d like to kick things off by thanking you for taking the time to speak to me today Oscar, and also to congratulate you on your recently announced inclusion to the Almighty Fighting Championship Barnsley card.

I hope training has been going well in the build-up to your scheduled return to the cage.

Previously set to face off against Mark Ewan at Caged Steel 29, due to unforeseen circumstances, the show had to be postponed. What was going through your mind at the time when it seemed your camp was in vain?

“For me, no camp is ever in vain. I’m always learning and growing every day in the gym, so it’s just going to make me better for the next guy.”

It must have been a tremendous relief for yourself and your team to be a part of the Almighty Fighting Championships trip to Barnsley on August 20th, and especially because of the location being close to your heart?

“Yeah, I absolutely love fighting in Barnsley, it was my home town growing up. So to be able to fight there for me, in front of the home crowd, is an honour.”

Previously taking the walk to the Almighty cage back in 2020, you have a great opportunity to once again make it a victorious trip to Ray Thompson’s phenomenal organisation. Will your 2nd walk to the cage in Barnsley trigger future plans with Almighty along your professional journey?

“I’m hoping, after this fight, I get a title shot with the organisation. The lightweight belt is vacant and I can see myself taking it this year/early next year.”

A new date and new opposition. Set to take on Mike Thompson in what’s set to be a sold-out Barnsley Metrodome, what do you make of Mike in the build-up to your highly anticipated meeting?

“Me and Mike were matched up to fight earlier this year but unfortunately, he had to pull out so Dan Gibbon took his place and we fought in April. Mike is a good solid opponent, I need these kinds of fights to improve and show work my way up to being the best lightweight in the country.”

With a new warrior to take on, will you be looking to mix up your approach to your new opposition?

“No new approach, this is MMA, we can do near enough what we want in there. So whether it’s a KO, TKO, sub or decision I’m looking to give it my all and leave it all in the cage.”

In recent weeks, many explosive bouts have been set in stone for what is expected to be one of the most exciting cards of the calendar year. Other than your inclusion on the night, are there any matchups that you’re aware of that you’re looking forward to witnessing?

“Not really mate. I know there are some absolute bangers on the night, I’ll be watching my teammates at AVT fight but other than that I’m just going to focus on my fight.”

Congratulations again on your inclusion Oscar and I wish you all the best for August.

Last but not least do you have a message for the fans that will be in attendance and anybody you’d like to give a shout-out to?

“To everyone coming to watch, you know when I fight it’s always going to be a banger so just enjoy. And yeah, a big shout-out to my sponsors, Unrivalled Performance, Dreamcoats, Ben Robinson visuals, MJP and 4eleven.”
