Stephen Thompson vs. Michel Pereira scrapped from UFC 289

Stephen Thompson vs. Michel Pereira has been scrapped from UFC 289, but the good news is that the welterweight matchup has only been postponed until July. Sources close to the situation confirmed the news to BJPENN.com, stating that contracts were never sent out. Although no reason was given for the delay, Thompson had called for this fight and will no doubt be eager to get back in the Octagon to showcase his skills against the Brazilian Pereira.

Thompson, who holds notable victories over Rory MacDonald, Jorge Masvidal, and Robert Whittaker among others, is coming off a TKO win over Kevin Holland at UFC Orlando in December 2021. The seventh-ranked welterweight fighter in the world is looking to keep the momentum going as he eyes a shot at the title.

Pereira, on the other hand, is on a five-fight winning streak, including decision victories over Andre Fialho, Niko Price, and Khaos Williams. The 28-11 fighter from Brazil is a thrilling striker with a reputation for putting on exciting fights. His most recent outing saw him defeat Santiago Ponzinibbio by split decision last May.

Although fans will have to wait a little longer to see these two dynamic fighters in the cage, the anticipation will only grow as the matchup approaches. It will be interesting to see how these two stylistically different fighters will match up when they eventually face off in July.
