The highly anticipated mixed martial arts event, UFC 297, is set to captivate fans as it unfolds at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario. It is scheduled for January 20, 2024, in Canada.
Tensions are reaching a boiling point ahead of UFC 297’s main event clash between Sean Strickland and Dricus du Plessis. Strickland, the reigning middleweight champion, issued a startling threat, vowing to stab Du Plessis if the latter dared to discuss his childhood trauma again.
The dangerous warning has added extra intensity to their already heated rivalry, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown on Saturday.
Tarzan Sends His Message
The UFC 296 fight week witnessed an explosive turn of events during a highly anticipated seasonal press conference. Sean Strickland and Dricus du Plessis, two headline fighters for the upcoming event, took center stage alongside other fighters. However, the atmosphere turned tense when Du Plessis, also known as ‘Stillknocks,’ took a verbal jab at Strickland, referencing the UFC middleweight champion’s abusive childhood.
The press conference, initially meant to promote the event, quickly transformed into a fiery exchange of words and emotions. The heated exchange of words later turned into a physical altercation cage-side at UFC 296 where the upcoming main eventers were seated very closely.
Strickland recently commented the the physical altercation with Du Plessis on his podcast The Man Dance saying:
“I actually sent him a message and I was like, ‘Dude listen, Dricus, we’re going to go try to murder each other, but if you bring that s*** up again, I will f*cking stab you.’
Press conference, weigh-in — I just told Dricus. He was cool about it, he was cool about it. But again, I’m not telling you I don’t want to fight you, Dricus. I’m not saying you’re not a good fighter. I’m just saying that that’s a line that, when crossed, it transcends fighting. Like, if I go to Canada and you bring that up, well guess what? I’m going to go to jail, they’re going to deport me, and we spent eight weeks of training for no f*cking reason.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting.)
Du Plessis With No Regrets

“I don’t regret anything,”
“I said what I said. Listen, if you’re dishing it out, you’re going to get it. I’m not going to keep on hammering on it, but I stand by what I said. I did not joke about it. What happened was fact. I stated fact. He joked about it, in previous interviews. I didn’t joke about it, I stated the facts. Obviously, it had a massive effect on him. I won’t be hammering on that because it’s not necessary. I got the results I wanted. I don’t need to hammer on one thing.”
In warnings, threats, and unapologetic statements, UFC 297 looms large as a must-watch event, where Strickland and Du Plessis are not just fighting for a championship belt but to settle a score that goes beyond the boundaries of the octagon.
