Sean Brady blasts Ian Garry after title claim

Following his dominant submission win against Leon Edwards at UFC London on Saturday, Sean Brady was critical of Ian Garry’s claim that he should be next in line for the title. Brady’s performance in London has propelled his name up the rankings to number one contender in the UFC Welterweight division, after dominating Edwards before submitting the Englishman via a guillotine choke.

Ian Garry, who is coming off a loss to number two-ranked Shavkat Rakhmonov, which saw the Irishman lose a narrow decision, claims that he should be next for Belal Muhammad. Garry said on Instagram that “I had a No. 1 contender’s fight where the guy (Rakhmonov) now has to get knee reconstruction and is out for a year. But you know, it’s not my fault. I didn’t do it. I didn’t stab his knee 20 times and boot the leg off. I’m not fighting for a world title because I’m coming off a loss, and they’re giving it to a guy who’s been injured for a year, and they think that’s more exciting, but they’re wrong.”

Garry added, “They’ve given it to Jack Della Maddalena because I’m coming off a loss. That’s OK. Don’t worry. I’ll get you all. You’re all mine.” Jack Della Maddalena is scheduled to fight Belal Muhammad at UFC 315 in May for the UFC Welterweight title.

Speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, Sean Brady hit back at Garry, saying, “You lost your fight. What are you talking about? You came in second place. You don’t get to be rewarded for that.” Brady added that “(Ian Garry is) No. 7 at this point? Lost his last fight. I’ve won my last three, just beat a former champion who was a really good champion. I’ve got bigger things going on than Ian Machado Garry.”

Welterweight Title Picture

The Welterweight Title Picture is shaping up nicely with a number of intriguing matchups on the cards. Fans online have called for Ian Garry and Leon Edwards to face off, with both fighters having previously fallen out with each other following alleged incidents when the two trained together. Brady and Shavkat are a potential number one contender fight, with Shavkat previously having been awarded a title shot before Belal Muhammad pulled out at UFC 310 in December. Brady has already highlighted this as a potential matchup. Former champion Kamaru Usman, who has not fought at welterweight in two years, is still ranked number four in the division, and rising star Joaquin Buckley, who sits in number six both do not currently have fights scheduled. It is indeed a very intriguing time in the welterweight division, with a number of fighters laying claim to be next in line for the champion.
