Tony Ferguson and Dillon Danis were set to face off in the Global Fight League (GFL), a new MMA promotion that had scheduled its debut events for May 24 and 25. However, the GFL announced the cancellation of these events due to financial issues involving one of its key investors.
Despite the hype surrounding the fight, the cancellation left everyone disappointed. And both Ferguson and Danis didn’t hold back. Breaking their silence, the two stars shared strong and surprisingly similar reactions, calling out the situation with explosive frustration.
Tony Ferguson and Dillon Danis Speak Out Amid Uncertainty
The GFL announced on Wednesday that it had canceled its first two events, scheduled for May 24 and May 25. The announcement came as a huge shock to former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson.
The 41-year-old was hoping to make a strong comeback after an eight-fight losing streak that marked the end of his UFC career. He had been training hard for his GFL debut and expressed his frustration on Instagram following the shocking news. He wrote, “Great practice. F—— bet it’s on. Dillon gon’ get it.”
For Dillon Danis, the frustration seemed even deeper than it was for “El Cucuy.” Danis was also set to fight KSI in a boxing match earlier in March, but KSI withdrew just eight days before the event due to illness.
The 31-year-old wrote, “Being real, I’m frustrated as hell. I wanted to stay as active as possible for myself and for everyone who supports me in 2025.” He then explained that he’s receiving criticism not only for the canceled fight with KSI but now also for the one with Tony.
However, just two hours later, Danis added another post to provide a glimmer of hope. “Just got word, don’t believe everything you hear. My fight with Tony Ferguson is still on,” he wrote. Following the continuous messages from the two stars, the GFL boss finally spoke out publicly.
GFL Boss Steps In After Dillon Danis Speaks Out
Finally, GFL boss Darren Owen has taken action after Dillon Danis and Tony Ferguson voiced their frustration over the cancellation of the league’s debut event. Owen addressed the concerns on Wednesday, assuring fans and fighters that efforts are underway to resolve the situation and keep the league’s vision alive.
Owen reached out to Ariel Helwani of Yahoo Sports on Wednesday, explaining the reason behind the cancellation and outlining his plan for rescheduling. ‘We’re working on a solution,’ Owen said.
He added, “My main investor didn’t fulfill his April obligation which has caused a problem. I’ll keep you posted but I believe we will be able work through it. I think we can make it happen for June.”
