Inside the Lives of MMA Stars When They’re Not Fighting

Everyone loves MMA for the fighting, the drama and the terrifying feeling of watching fighters go at each other. However, there’s a whole other side to MMA stars that doesn’t involve blood, bruises or the cheering of the crowd. So what do fighters actually do when they’re not in the cage? You might be surprised.

Taking time off from the cage is a good idea. A lot of the more experienced fighters know the importance of this, which is why some retired (but often coming back) MMA fighters are mentioned here, as taking time off is actually a skill they need to learn. These fighters spend so much time trying to get good and big in the industry that taking time off feels counter-productive but it’s the opposite.

Conor McGregor is a Forever Legend

If you’ve followed MMA even a little, you’ve heard of Conor McGregor. He’s as famous for his knockout power as he is for his lifestyle and the occasional retirement tweet.

Lately, he’s been in and out of the fight game however he sees fit. It seems to be a bit of a joke to him, honestly. One minute he’s posting training footage and the next he’s announcing he’s “done.” It’s funny but everyone takes it because not only do they see him as a joker but also because when he does get serious about fighting, he goes into a different mode that you do not want to mess with.

In 2024, McGregor went full Hollywood. He teamed up with Jake Gyllenhaal in the Netflix remake of Road House. If you haven’t seen it yet, imagine Conor doing what he does best: throwing punches, delivering sharp one-liners and flashing that signature smirk. It’s a wild ride and shows a whole new side of the Irish superstar. He was actually pretty good in the movie, not like a lot of other fighters who try to act but don’t do it well. McGregor is quite the talented actor, who knew?

Off-screen, McGregor keeps busy getting into different business deals that come his way, sometimes people even speak about him representing Online casino brands as he is rumoured to enjoy a round or two of poker, so perhaps he would be an ideal spokesperson.

Kayla Sirjord is Making Her Name

Kayla Sirjord might not have the same household name recognition as McGregor (yet) but she’s making waves in her own way, especially when she’s not fighting.

When she’s not inside the cage, Kayla keeps things grounded. You’ll often find her sharing insights on mental health, training balance and personal growth on social media. She’s not just about fight mode; she always tries to give back to the female community that supports her. She’s big on nutrition and mobility training, often showing behind-the-scenes clips of her cooking or doing yoga flows. It’s refreshing to see an athlete so in tune with both body and mind. Plus, she offers really good advice because she has to treat her body like a temple in order to perform at the level she needs, so you know she’s done her research.

Caio Borralho is the Natural One

Caio Borralho, aka “The Natural,” is more than just a rising star in the UFC; he’s a full-on intellectual who loves to dive deep into science, technology and philosophy. Yes, you read that right. Everyone is surprised when they hear it.

When he’s not throwing down in the middleweight division, Caio’s often reading up on neuroscience or coding. He’s also passionate about teaching martial arts to underprivileged youth, which is as cool as it is important.

He’s the kind of guy who might break down a rear-naked choke one minute and then explain blockchain tech the next. There is so much more to this one.

Will Fleury Loves the Outdoors

Will Fleury is the type of fighter who seems just as comfortable trekking through nature as he is inside a cage. The Irishman brings a rugged vibe to everything he does and his life outside of MMA reflects that.

When he’s not competing, Will’s known to disappear into the mountains, often hiking, trail running or taking solo retreats into the wild. It’s all about disconnecting to reconnect. It’s important for him to take time off and go back to Ireland, to his roots, as sometimes the busy MMA life, which is often in the USA, can become too much.

Amanda Nunes: Life After (and Maybe Before) Retirement

The Lioness, aka Amanda Nunes. She officially retired in 2023 after dominating two divisions and basically rewriting the book on what it means to be a female MMA GOAT.

But lately? She’s been teasing a return, which fans just can’t get enough of.

She’s still training, still posting workout clips and still carrying herself like a champion. And honestly, would anyone be shocked if she walked back into the Octagon and took someone’s belt? Probably not.

Outside of the gym, Amanda’s life is full of family, travel and mentorship. With a new baby, she spends a lot of time going at a slow pace but she always talks about how much she misses fighting.

There is So Much More to Fighters

It’s not just about their training or how they eat. These MMA fighters have rich lives beyond the octagon and this is often what keeps them grounded. It’s not about always being the best; sometimes it takes a moment of disconnect to truly get back in tune with yourself.
