With Islam Makhachev’s imminent arrival in the UFC’s Welterweight division to fight current champion, Jack Della Maddalena, it would seem that the current cream of the division will have to wait for that fight to take place before getting their shot. Sean Brady has expressed a desire to fight Shavkat Rakhmonov in a number-one-contender bout.

Speaking on The BradyBagz Show, Brady said “I seen through a little birdie that Shavkat was saying something about him coming back in November or December so if he’s coming back in November, I want to fight soon, but I would wait and fight him at MSG on the same card as Jack and Islam, and then that’s a true number one contender’s fight,”

Brady added, “(Rakhmonov) was guaranteed a (title) fight. I beat the number one guy; whoever wins that will be the true number one contender, so I would like to do that. We’re going to reach out this week and see if that’s an option.”

Brady is currently number two in the Welterweight rankings and is on a three-fight winning streak, sporting an impressive 18-1 record in MMA. His only loss came to former champion, Belal Muhamma, in which Belal dominated and ultimately got a second-round TKO win. Since then, Brady has defeated Kelvin Gastelum, Gilbert Burns and Leon Edwards, with his most recent win against former champion Edwards being his most impressive victory to date. He dominated Edwards with pressure on forced the fight to the ground, ultimately getting the submission in round four. Whilst Brady is predominantly a grappler, his improvement on the feet has been noticeable over the last few years, and has enabled him to take his game to the next level.

Shavkat Rakhmonov is one of the scariest fighters at Welterweight and the Kazakhstani sports an impressive undefeated record of 19-0, with 18 of those wins coming via finish. Rakhmonov has been touted as a potential champion for a number of years. Rakhmonov has wins over Geoff Neal, Stephen Thompson and Ian Machado Garry, with Garry being his most recent and arguably hardest fight. Rakhmonov is definitely a well-rounded fighter, with 10 of his wins coming via submission, and eight of his wins coming via KO/TKO. He is dangerous in all aspects of MMA.

Brady and Rakhmonov seem likely to fight each other to decide the next contender in the division, and it would serve as an intriguing bout between two of the best Welterweights in the world.
