In his Amateur MMA debut at BMF MMA 5, he faced Jamie Falconer and defeated him via technical knockout in the first round. Simmons defeated Yaha Mazel via unanimous decision at BMF MMA 7. Then at BMF MMA 8, he submitted Paul Esquerre in round two. Simmons defeated Esquerre for the second time via TKO in the first round. He defeated Ronan Shaughnessy at Caestus MMA 3 via unanimous decision. Simmons defeated Muhamed Ben Rhouma via unanimous decision at Progress Check Fighting Championship 1. He submitted Garon Shemar in the first round via triangle choke to score his second submission victory as an Amateur at BMF MMA 11. Simmons defeated Jake Ngai at Braveheart 1 via unanimous decision.
At FCC 44, he defeated Mickey Leithner via unanimous decision to become the FCC Amateur Featherweight champion to earn the fifth decision win of his Amateur career and victory number one under the FCC banner. Simmons also picked up his ninth consecutive win as an Amateur mixed martial artist in the process.
