A rematch nearly 8 years in the making is finally set to take place as the 115-pound champion “Thug Rose” is set to face “The Cookie Monster” in what is sure to be one of the most anticipated fights in women’s MMA.
Both fighters met back in. 2014 at the TUF finale in which Rose made her UFC debut, at the time she was still very green and was only 2-1 as a pro, Carla, on the other hand, had already competed for 4 years and had a 10-2 record at the time of their fight. During their first encounter, Carla was able to secure an RNC and submit Rose in the 3rd round. Esparza then became the first women’s 115-pound champion that night.
Both fighters have had extremely different careers since that fight, as Rose is widely considered a fan favourite as well as one of the most dominant champions in her weight class, she has scored victories over Joanna Jedrzejczyk (2x), Zhang Weili (2x), Michelle Waterson, PVZ, Jessica Andrade. As for Carla she lost her title against Joanna and has yet to reclaim it, she has come extremely close and has always been one fight away from her shot. Once stereotyped as only “another” wrestler, Carla has reinvented herself and is on a 5 fight win streak that started in 2019.
UFC 274 is set to take place in Phoenix Arizona on May 7th and is headlined by the Lightweight matchup of Charles Oliveira vs Justin Gaethje, which also features Michael Chandler vs Tony Ferguson, the return of Shogun Rua vs OSP, and Donald Cerrone vs Joe Lauzon
