The UFC has announced a massive bantamweight fight as #1 contender and former champ Petr Yan takes on superstar and #13 ranked Sean O’Malley in a pivotal matchup that has title implications written all over it. The two fighters are amongst the elite in their division and have the fans salivating at the possible fireworks.
The former champ is currently sits with a record of 16-3 with his most recent fight being a split decision loss to current champion Aljamain Sterling last April. The Russian fighters was looking good in his rematch with Aljo, but was dominated on the ground by the BJJ black belt. While Petr felt he still won the fight, the judges felt otherwise. Regardless of that outcome, Petr has always shown to be one of the most well rounded MMA fighters especially i his division, with a blend of striking, speed and takedowns that make him one of the best.
Sean, is coming off a fight vs Pedro Munhoz where an eye poke prematurely ended what many considered to be Sean’s biggest test since Chito Vera. Just like all his fights O’Malley showed up in tremendous shape, showcasing his striking and kicking ability. While many think he may be out of his league facing the former champ and #1 contender, Sean maintains a mind set that has allowed him to attain an 15-1 record, as well as being one of the most popular fighters in the game.
The projected fight is being targeted for UFC 280 which will feature a title fight between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev. So if Charles vs Islam is every grappling fans dream, then this fight is every striking fans dream as well. Both fighters have a high paced style and come to every fight 100% ready for war. With Petr coming off a loss and Sean a NC, one would assume the motivation to get back into the win column will be extremely high.
