Lisa Houston – “I can’t wait to get back in there”

Lisa Houston 0-1-0 is an Irish amateur Mixed Martial Artist currently competing in the Strawweight division, representing SBG Strabane. She has competed for the Irish Mixed Martial Arts Association and is set to make her debut on September 10th for On Top Promotions.   I’d like to start things off by thanking you for taking the time to speak with me today Lisa, and also to congratulate you on your upcoming inclusion to the incredibly stacked On Top 24 card.   I hope training has been going well in the build-up to your scheduled return to the cage?   “Hi Aaron, yeah training is going well since I’ve got back into it. I had to take a few months off when I broke my radial head at the end of April, so to be back training hard again, is great! It was frustrating having to take time off, mentally and physically, but I made it my point to still go to the gym to watch what was being taught, so that I could mentally learn the techniques.”   Image by John Fleming Photography   It’s been 2 long years of waiting, but On Top Promotions are back with a bang. So many phenomenal warriors have been included in one of the most highly anticipated cards of the year. How did it feel when receiving the call that you’d be part of the Scottish based organisations return to action?   “I was super excited to get matched for this card, mainly because I struggle to get opponents my weight/experience so as soon as the opportunity was there, I jumped at it. I was also extremely appreciative of On Top promotions, being able to support our travel needs, this is not something you get with every promotion, so we are incredibly grateful for this.”   This will be your 2nd outing along your amateur journey this year, previously taking on Nadine Abbott-Bissett at the Irish Junior & Senior National Championships: Finals. Despite a valiant effort, the night wasn’t yours. For a 1st outing, you took on a rather well rounded opponent, what did you take from your collision with Nadine back in February?   “As I said previously, it’s difficult to get opponents my weight/experience in Ireland, so when I got the chance to fight Nadine in February, I said yes in a heartbeat. My mum always taught me to take each opportunity as they arise, as they might not come again. Nadine had a lot of fight experience prior in comparison to me and I had heard she was thinking about going pro, so I thought what have I got to lose? If you want to become the best, you have to fight the best. I just wanted to get into the cage and ultimately see if I liked it, see how I reacted and performed. I felt I performed very well for someone’s first outing in the cage and I can’t wait to get back in there to fight again! What I took from it? Don’t tap out on the bell hahaha nah, just kidding! I loved every minute of it. If you watch that fight back, at the end you will see the huge smile on my face, I was so happy and proud of myself, regardless of the result. I just wanted to get into the cage and feel out what it was like, it may not have gone my way, I may not have performed how I intended to, but that’s all part of the journey.”   The next destination is Linwood, where you’ll be making your On Top debut, for the fans in attendance and the readers. Could you give us some insight into what to expect from yourself on September 10th?   “I’m sure it’s going to be a fantastic fight for the two of us, and I look forward to making this fight entertaining to watch! I expect her to be a tough opponent, but I will be there to show the preparation and hard work that I’ve put in over the last two years and let that shine under the bright lights.”   You are set to take on yet another highly rated competitor in The Griphouse’s Angie Morrus. In recent years, the ladies of MMA have given us fight fans some of the greatest highlights the sport has ever seen, and is a welcome inclusion to On Top’s 24th card to date. What do you make of Angie in the build-up to your scheduled meeting at the On-X leisure centre?     “Being from Ireland, I’ve never heard of Angie, so I know nothing about her, which makes no difference to me. I focus on me and my skill and what I can do. I just prepare for the fight and not the fighter, but I’m sure Angie has put in the hard work as well and I’m looking forward to meeting her inside the cage and putting on a show for the fans watching.”   With everything set in place, we are now just eleven days out from what is set to rumble the very foundations of Scotland when On Top returns to the On-X leisure centre. John will take on Luke Dyson, and what a card they have in store, if you have the opportunity to be in attendance grab it with both hands.     Last but not least do you have a message for the fans that will be in attendance and anybody you’d like to give a shout-out to?   “I would just like to give a huge shout out to all the boys/girls in my gym at SBG Strabane who have pushed me and helped me along the way in preparing for this fight. These guys have witnessed the blood, sweat and literal tears some nights, so I just want them to know that I appreciate them all so much and of course my coach, Garath Vaughan who’s constantly trekking around the country to be

Michael “Venom” Page vs Ross “The Hitman” Houston: The Keys to Victory

Michael “Venom” Page vs Ross “The Hitman” Houston is a fight I have been itching to see since it was announced for various reasons. Reason one: stylistically this is a fantastic fight. One one side of the cage you have Page, an expert in karate-style striking and a master of the art of countering his opponents. On the other side of the cage, you have Houston, a talented all-rounder who can make the fight nasty for his opponents, especially in the clinch exchanges. Reason two: this is Page’s best chance at killing the long-standing “overrated” tag fight fans have placed on him. In Houston, he faces the toughest test he has had since losing to Douglas Lima, a young, hungry and talented fighter, who has proven himself to be one of the best in Europe by becoming Cage Warriors welterweight champion. If “Venom” wins this, he can shut his haters up. Reason three: Houston gets to step foot into a big spotlight. No disrespect to Cage Warriors, but Bellator is still the bigger promotion and just the platform Houston needs to raise his profile. There is no bigger opportunity than this, the first-ever MMA event held by a major promotion in France, and the first time the BBC has ever broadcasted an MMA event. A win here sets him up for stardom. Reason four: It’s the biggest all-British fight of the year. There are a couple of things each fighter needs to do if they hope to win, starting with Page. For Michael “Venom” Page to win this fight, he needs to stay in the centre of the cage and upright. His style of striking allows him to counter an opponent the second they move in, almost like how a snake strike strikes at its prey. The London Shootfighters fighter has shown he is outstanding at this in the past, just look at his wins over Evangelista Santos and Giovanni Melillo for prime examples, and that’s exactly what he needs to do here. Hold the centre and wait for Houston to advance before countering the movement. The other thing Page needs to do is keep moving. He can’t stand still and taunt opponents like we have seen him do in the past. If you stand still opposite Houston, you’re either going to be knocked to the floor by a hard punch, or be taken down via a slick takedown. For Houston, his key to victory is to just be a nasty b*****d and make this fight ugly. If Houston can get in and get MVP hooked into a clinch before driving him up against the fence, he will have won a small victory of MVP. Not only will he have got into range and not been hit by anything with enough power to drop him, he will have also put Page in a position he is uncomfortable with. We know Houston is comfortable making fights nasty on the fence, slipping out of the clinch to use elbow strikes like he has been taught at Team Renegade, before resuming the clinch or looking for a takedown. If you want evidence of this, look no further than his fight with Nicolas Dalby at Cage Warriors 106, where he delivered an elbow with such precision and power, it cut Dalby so deep that the cutman could not stop the bleeding, even with excess vasoline. Once in the clinch, Hosuton takes away MVP’s biggest weapon, his rangey striking, Page can’t use his kicks or his punches effectively if he has the Scotsman holding onto him. So not only will Houston be able to use his best offensive, he will strip Page of his best weaponry too. We know Page isn’t comfortable off his back, just look at how desperate he was to not be taken down by Paul Daley. If Houston can make him uncomfortable by getting a clinch, delivering shots, and then taking Page down in consecutive rounds, he will win this fight.

Ross Houston to face Stefano Paternò for Welterweight title at CW98

Newly-crowned Cage Warriors welterweight champion Stefano Paternò will put his title on the line at Cage Warriors 98 against Ross Houston. The Italian world champion captured the title with a first-round knockout of Mehrdad Janzemini at Cage Warriors 95 in London back in July, and will make the first defence of his newly-won title at Birmingham’s Genting Arena on October 20. Paternò(12-2-1) will face undefeated Scottish contender Ross Houston (7-0) whose last outing – also at Cage Warriors 95 – saw him claim an impressive rear-naked choke victory over Nathan Jones. Now the undefeated Scot will step up to face Paternò in a bid to become the first Scottish fighter to capture Cage Warriors gold since former CW lightweight champion and current UFC lightweight Stevie Ray. The welterweight title clash between Paternò and Houston tops off a fight card that will also feature the semi-finals of the Cage Warriors Featherweight Championship Tournament, with Dean Trueman facing off against Lewis Monarch, and Aiden Lee taking on Paull McBain. Cage Warriors matchmaker Ian Dean is working on stacking the deck for the event, with more bouts set to be announced in due course. Speaking about the welterweight title fight, Cage Warriors President Graham Boylan said: “The fans in Birmingham will be treated to a superb title fight as Stefano Paternò puts his belt on the line for the first time against Ross Houston. “Ross is undefeated and fully deserves his shot at the title. But Stefano won the belt in impressive fashion and it’s great to see a champion so keen to get straight back in there and put his belt on the line. “It should make for a great fight on a great night for Birmingham’s MMA fans.” Tickets for Cage Warriors 98 at the Genting Arena, Birmingham are on sale, with a special early bird offer giving fans the chance to snap up their seats at a special 20% off. Click here for more information.

Lewis Long vs Ross Houston confirmed for Cage Warriors 91

A huge fight between recent TUF tryout Ross Houston and number-one ranked UK Welterweight Lewis Long has been set for Cage Warriors’ return to Wales on March 3rd. Cage Warriors have announced that two of the most exciting fighters on the European Welterweight scene will meet in the octagon in their first Welsh event of 2018. Long (15-3) has finished 12 opponents within the distance since his MMA career began, securing an impressive 80% finish rate. Houston (5-0), a dangerous fighter with very real capability to end the fight both on the feet and on the ground, vows to remain undefeated and continue to dominate the division. Houston’s last outing saw him defeat home favourite Aaron Khalid at CW87 in one of the most entertaining bouts of the night. Many believe Khalid’s experience would be too much for Houston, but were proved wrong when the Scotsman showcased superior skill both during striking and grappling exchanges and won via unanimous decision. At the same event, Lew Long fell short to Roberto ‘RoboCop’ Soldic, one of the highest ranked fighters on the continent, so will look to get back to winning ways and assert his claim as one of the division’s best. “This is a fight that had to happen in the Cage Warriors Welterweight division,” said CW President Graham Boylan. “Both of these guys have knockout power and legit submission skills, so people have been asking to see this one for a while. A lot of questions will be answered on March 3rd.” This announcement adds another exciting fight to an already stellar card, topped by a match up between Bantamweight knockout artists Josh Reed and Brian Bouland. Welshmen Kris Edwards, Richard Williams and Mason Jones will also fight on the night, making this one event not to miss for those looking to catch Wales’ top fighting talent put on a huge come-country event. CW91 looks to be another sell-out show, so fans are advised to grab tickets while they can from the Cage Warriors website here.
