Co-founder of the UFC, Campbell McLaren, the man responsible for UFC 1’s legendary “two men enter and only one man leaves” marketing campaign is once again set to break new ground in MMA with his Combate Americas promotion.
McLaren founded Combate Americas in 2011 with the objective of giving America’s enormous Hispanic community it’s own MMA platform, and thanks to worldwide TV deals and events shown on the UFC’s hugely popular Fight Pass network, the promotion has grown exponentially in recent years.
Now, the forward thinking McLaren has teamed up with Relevent Sports, a division of RSE Ventures, in an intriguing partnership to produce “Combate Clasico,” a live, televised MMA event that will see two fighters from rival cities in Spain – Abner “Skullman” Lloveras (20-9-1) of Barcelona and Javier Fuentes (9-4) of Madrid face off just two days before global football powers Real Madrid and FC Barcelona compete at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 29.
This game marks the first time both club’s meet in North America and the first time outside of Spain since 1982. The ‘El Classico’ is one of the world’s fiercest footballing rivalries and the game will form part of the International Champions Cup tournament presented by Heineken.
For McLaren to position his Combat Americas brand with two of the sporting world’s super powers is nothing short of genius.
Relevent Sports Chairman Charlie Stillitano said: “We are thrilled to partner with Combate Americas and ‘Combate Clasico’ promises to be a must-see event in the lead up to the ‘El Clasico’ Miami at Hard Rock Stadium.”
McLaren said: “This promises to be a phenomenal week of live sports, culminating in a historic showdown between the world’s two biggest soccer powerhouses.
“We are excited to be working with Relevent Sports and the International Champions Cup to bring the Combate Americas brand of electrifying, professional Hispanic MMA action to Miami”.
The event will air live in the U.S. on Azteca America at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT. It will also air the following night, Friday, July 28 on TV Azteca in Mexico. Fans around the world can watch English broadcast with Gil Melendez and Juliana Pena on ESPN 3 and in Spain live on Gol TV.
