For the 2nd time in a row, Justin Gaethje lost a fight he was seemingly on the brink of winning. I had him losing the opening two rounds, but he looked the likely winner in the 3rd, hurting Poirier badly and a stoppage in the 4th looked a distinct possibility. The stoppage came, but it was Poirier who had his hand raised. Poirier heads towards a possible title shot, Gaethje needs refinement, winning fights again over excitement.
There is a time a fighter’s body just can’t do it anymore, or at least to the level it could before. There also comes a time when the sport moves on and leaves you behind. For Carlos Condit it’s probably a combination of the two, he’s now on a 4 fight skid.
Israel Adesanya has a ton of hype around him, but while he is certainly promising and undoubtedly talented, we need to hold back a little on the hype. Adesanya has time on his hands, he should be given it.
Adesanya moved to 13-0, I had it 29-28 for him, but there is work to be done. His Achilles heel is definitely off his back and I also thought his striking wasn’t on point against Vettori.
Scoring is so subjective as we know, the Casey v Waterson fight a prime example. Casey won most of the first round, but a late takedown by her opponent seemingly won her that round, despite minimal damage once on the ground.
Should one takedown carry more value than 3/4 minutes of superior work on the feet? While I wouldn’t call it a robbery, but I had it for Casey 29-28.
