It has been three months since we last saw a new king crowned in the UFC heavyweight division when Francis Ngannou knocked out Stipe Miocic in the 2nd round of their highly anticipated rematch, the newly crowned “baddest man on the planet” is riding on a 5 fight win streak all by way of stoppage.
Since then we have heard rumours of a possible August or September rematch with fan-favourite Derrick “the black beast” Lewis who last beat the champion in a disappointing fight that went the distance in 2018 with no real time table being set. Both fighters have maintained their reputation as two of the most powerful and feared strikers in the sport with both showing improvement in their cardio as well as their grappling which has always been the biggest point of criticism in their careers. Lewis has dealt with serious back problems that have hampered him in some of his fights and has been focusing on losing weight and being in better shape for his next fight.
However, a new contender is now looking to slide his way into the next title fight with French striker Ciryl Gane emerging as a possible option for the Cameroonian champion. The Frenchman sports a perfect 9-0 record (6-0 in the UFC) and is coming off wins against former heavyweight champ Junior Dos Santos, Jairzinho Rosentruik, and most recently top contender Aleksander Volkov.
Let us not forget the dark horse of the race in former light heavyweight GOAT Jon Jones. While this fight seems the least likely due to Jon’s recent pay dispute with UFC brass, it is without a doubt the matchup every fan wants to see since the former 205-pound fighter announced his move up a weight class while also transforming his body into a more muscle-bound frame.
