Kevin Lee released by UFC

Kevin Lee has officially been released by the UFC following a very difficult run of fights for the former interim title challenger. Lee’s last bout was back in august where he dropped a unanimous decision to budding contender Daniel Rodriguez. The bout marked the 5th loss in 7 fights for Lee, going back to his loss to Tony Ferguson back in 2017. The release comes just 2 years after his highlight reel head kick finish of Gregor Gillespie, with back to back defeats against the previously mentioned Rodriguez and now champion, Charles Oliveira.

Kevin has been a big name for the UFC ever since his over the top rivalry with Michael Chiesa, which resulted in their now infamous ‘don’t talk about my f****** mom’ confrontation. Lee would go on to win that fight and earn himself an interim title shot in the process. Lee would meet ‘El Cucuy’ Tony Ferguson in a very close back and forth fight that saw Lee control the majority of the ground game. Unfortunately for Lee, he would get caught in a triangle choke in the 4th round. Lee was praised for his performance against Ferguson especially battling what was very clearly a bad staph infection on his chest. The loss would break a 5 fight win streak and Lee would continue to trade wins and losses for his next 6 fights.

At just 29, this is certainly not the end for Kevin Lee but certainly a huge setback. it is going to be interesting to see what’s next for Lee. Will he go back to the regionals and work his way back up? or could we potentially see him head to Bellator, PFL, ONE Championship or another big promotion?
