UFC Vegas 47 hosted the promotional debut for two contract winners from Season 5 of Dana White’s Contender Series. How did the contract winners fare in the octagon?
Jailton Almeida
In an all Brazilian affair, Jailton Almeida executed a spectacular performance that consisted of complete dominance over Danilo Marques. Almeida opened the bout by launching a front kick, and immediately followed with a double leg takedown attempt to take Marques up against the cage. With a body lock secured, Almeida showcased incredible strength to take Marques down to the canvas, establishing the mount whilst locking hold of Marques’ wrist to manipulate Marques’ foundation. Almeida’s dominant position rendered an impossible ultimatum for Marques; if Marques rolled away from the mount, Almeida posed a submission threat, but if Marques rolled into the mount, Almeida off-loaded brutal hammer fists. It was ultimately a high volume of heavy hammer fists that secured the TKO victory for Almeida at the 2 minute 57 seconds mark of the very first round. The victory extended Almeida’s professional record to 15-2, whilst taking his win-streak to ten.
Chidi Njokuani
Chidi Njokuani made a sensational debut, with an incredible 16 second KO victory over Marc-André Barriault. The bout opened with Njokuani throwing an inside leg kick and a front kick. Njokuani then capitalised on his reach advantage by throwing a left jab, followed by a thunderous right cross that knocked Barriault to the canvas. With a barrage of left punches for good measure, the bout was stopped at 16 seconds, making Njokuani’s victory the second fastest victory for a debutant in promotional history. Despite entering the contest with near-even odds, it was a completely one-sided affair that earned Njokuani a deserved $50,000 ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus.
