Zabit Magomedsharipov alerts UFC of retirement

Zabit Magomedsharipov is throwing in the towel on his Mixed Martial Arts career, according to Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting.

A natural MMA Champion according to his trainer Mark Henry, Magomedsharipov went 6-0 inside the UFC banner and had an overall 18-1 MMA record. He held notable wins over the likes of Kyle Bochniak, Jeremy Stephens and this weekend’s UFC on ESPN 37‘s headliner Calvin Kattar.

Zabit hasn’t stepped in the cage competitively since his unanimous decision win over Kattar in November of 2019. He was slated to face Featherweight fighter Yair Rodriguez on August 29th 2020, however, Rodriguez pulled out from the fight, due to injury. This match-up would have seen at the time, 3rd ranked Featherweight Magomedsharipov against 5th ranked Rodriguez.

Would Zabit have challenged for UFC gold?

On April 26th 2021, Zabit was removed from the UFC rankings due to his inactivity. Sitting in the number 3 spot.

In June of the same year, it was reported that Zabit was suffering from health issues relating to his immune system. Treatment for this required career-threatening surgery for the Russian.

Although rumours circulated from Zabit’s inner circle of a return, he would never be booked to fight again.
