Zabit Magomedsharipov alerts UFC of retirement

Zabit Magomedsharipov is throwing in the towel on his Mixed Martial Arts career, according to Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting. A natural MMA Champion according to his trainer Mark Henry, Magomedsharipov went 6-0 inside the UFC banner and had an overall 18-1 MMA record. He held notable wins over the likes of Kyle Bochniak, Jeremy Stephens and this weekend’s UFC on ESPN 37‘s headliner Calvin Kattar. Zabit hasn’t stepped in the cage competitively since his unanimous decision win over Kattar in November of 2019. He was slated to face Featherweight fighter Yair Rodriguez on August 29th 2020, however, Rodriguez pulled out from the fight, due to injury. This match-up would have seen at the time, 3rd ranked Featherweight Magomedsharipov against 5th ranked Rodriguez. Would Zabit have challenged for UFC gold? On April 26th 2021, Zabit was removed from the UFC rankings due to his inactivity. Sitting in the number 3 spot. In June of the same year, it was reported that Zabit was suffering from health issues relating to his immune system. Treatment for this required career-threatening surgery for the Russian. Although rumours circulated from Zabit’s inner circle of a return, he would never be booked to fight again. Zabit Magomedsharipov was an extremely exciting fighter in an extremely exciting division. If you haven’t already I would suggest watching all the highlights you can of him. And to add to some food for thought, how do you think Zabit Magomedsharipov would do in these fantasy matchups below? Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Max Holloway Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Brian Ortega Zabit Magomedsharipov vs Alexander Volkanovski Zabit Magomedsharipov vs The Korean Zombie Let us know in the comments.

Analyzing Brian Ortega vs Yair Rodriguez

UFC on ABC 3 has an official main event, as T-city will make his return to the octagon when he faces off against Pantera on July 16th in New York. This matches up the #2 and #3 featherweights in the UFC in a fight that will carry potential title implications as both fighters always seem to be on the cusp of fighting for a belt. This will mark the return of Brian Ortega since his war with Alexander Volkanovski in September 2021. The BJJ black belt was one of the head coaches on the Ultimate Fighter and has always shown that he is one of the most dangerous fighters on earth even against the champion. In a fight that many consider one of the greatest title fights in company history, Ortega had several moments where he almost took the crown. He has shown tremendous improvement in his striking but his ground game continues to be his bread and butter. Stylistically Yair will be difficult considering his awkward style, but if Ortega can recreate what Frankie Edgar did to a young Pantera I believe he will make quick work of him that night. As for Yair, this is his first fight since November of last year when he lost to Max Holloway in a fight that won fight of the night. The Mexican fighter is looking to get back into the win column after beating Jeremey Stephens and the Korean Zombie in 2018-19. Rodriguez has long been a potential contender for many years but has lost pivotal fights that would get him to that level. He has unfortunately also suffered several injuries as well as a contract dispute that saw him miss out on a mega-fight vs Zabit Magomedshapirov. If he can stay focused and cancel the background noise that has distracted him in the past, we could see a potential FOTY candidate. Both fighters present styles that are a yin and yang in some ways, but a the end of the day they are both dogs that have one objective in mind and that is to fight while giving it 110%. A win for Brian would put him in a penitential title eliminator or even a surprise title shot depending on how Volk vs Max 3 plays out. As for Yair, it would show the UFC that he is still the dangerous contender that he showed when he beat BJ Penn, Dan Hooker, Korean Zombie and Lil Heathen.

Holloway vs Rodriguez set for striking masterclass on UFC Fight Night July 17th

Former UFC featherweight champion Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway came off arguably the most impressive win of his career against Calvin Kattar. Holloway cemented his legacy as one of the 145-pounders GOATS, despite his two prior losses to current reigning champion Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski. Yair ‘El Pantera’ Rodriguez has been on a rocky road as of recently, his last outing was a rematch against Jeremy ‘Lil Heathen’ Stephens which was awarded a Fight of the Night in a unanimous decision win for Rodriguez. He was later scheduled to fight a long overdue Zabit Magomedsharipov, but as fate had it El Pantera had to withdraw due to an ankle injury, I get a Khabib, Ferguson vibe around that fight. The string of bad news continued for Rodriguez, unfortunately. On December 3rd 2020 UFC anti-doping agency USADA issued a 6-month suspension to the featherweight fighter due to failing to notify his whereabouts and being unavailable for drug testing to USADA. Yair has now been eligible to resume fighting from March 8th 2021. This summer we will see the GOAT of the featherweight division in a forward pushing, non-stop striking, Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway go up against Mexico’s dynamic striking and pinpoint precision of Yair ‘El Pantera’ Rodriguez. This one is a must-see!

Yair Rodriguez suspended for six months due to USADA violation

At the post-fight press conference for UFC Vegas 15, Dana White seemed very cryptic when answering a question regarding Rodriguez’s return. White even turned to his people asking “didn’t we release that publicly?” The media and fans alike we’re very confused about this, but now we have an answer. It turns out Rodriguez had failed to update his Whereabouts information and was unavailable for testing at locations provided in his Whereabouts Filings on three occasions. Due to the three failures in a 12-month period, this constitutes a policy violation under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy. USADA announced it at a press release on Thursday. As Rodriguez’s last failure occurred in September, this means that he won’t be able to return to the octagon until March. El Pantera last fought at UFC on ESPN 6: Reyes vs Weidman in October 2019. That fight was a rematch with Jeremy Stephens which he won via decision. There first bout ended early due to an accidental eye poke which left Stephens unable to continue. He was scheduled to fight Zabit Magomedsharipov in August but pulled out due to an ankle injury.

Backseat Matchmaker: The UFC featherweight title picture

With Max “Blessed” Holloway moving up to face Dustin Poirier for the interim Lightweight title, that leaves the 145-pound division without a champion. That isn’t to say there aren’t a list of viable contenders. The way I see it, you have 6 fighters, all in need of a big fight next, setting up two top contenders fights and one fight for the interim or vacant featherweight title (depending on the UFC’s decision regarding Holloway’s current venture at 155 pounds.).   The first fight on my 145 pounds wish list is a battle between two of the most exciting guys on the division. Yair Rodriguez has had a very stop-start career in the UFC but after his huge win over “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung, Yair announced that he was back and here to stay. He finished Jung with a crazy last minute upwards elbow after a back and forth war, putting him into the top 10 rankings. Yair needs to build momentum towards the top of the division and to do that he needs a top opponent who will push him further than he’s gone before. That opponent is Brian Ortega. Ortega recently fought for the title, going into the clash with Holloway with a lot of hype around him. Holloway frankly put the brakes on the Ortega finish train and showed everyone just how good he is. After a great fight but ultimately a fight that Ortega lost, he also needs to build some momentum in my opinion before he fights for the title once again. It would be easy to throw him in for the interim title or vacant one after he challenged for it last but there are other fighters who have picked up impressive wins in that time who are more deserving. By beating Yair, Ortega can rebuild himself at 145 pounds and put the division on notice that he’s coming to fight for that belt once again.   The second bout involves an enigma who has all eyes on him right now taking on a man who has been derailing hype trains for years and years. Zabit Magomedsharipov prompted me to write this wish list after his big win at the weekend when he defeated Jeremy Stephens via a convincing decision. The excitement around this guy is at an all-time high and he just beat a staple of the division in Stephens. I can definitely see the UFC putting him right into the title fight due to the hype around him and how exciting he is to watch but in my eyes, he needs a win over another top contender first. Had Stephens not lost to Jose Aldo before this fight, we may have a different story. After encountering Stephens and making it through, Zabit needs a true acid test and only one man fits that bill to the highest degree. Frankie Edgar has always gone about his business in the UFC but his resume is incredible, he’s still a top contender in the UFC and he’s a very tough fight for anyone out there. Frankie Edgar is the perfect fighter to match up with an exciting prospect. Despite his lengthy UFC career, he is still going strong, picking up wins and smiling whilst doing it. His cardio, wrestling and bulletproof mindset make him a nightmare fight for anyone and if Zabit hopes to get past him, he will need to produce an almost flawless performance. This fight puts either man in title contention with a win whether it be Edgar silencing another up and comer or Zabit proving he really is as good as people think by beating Edgar, who is held in such high regard.   This leaves the title fight and two men who in recent months have produced striking clinics. They both have looked incredible in their recent fights and with Holloway moving up, we get the opportunity for this fight which may not have happened otherwise due to both men having strong claims to Holloway’s crown. Alexander Volkanovski was one of the biggest success stories of 2018, picking up 3 wins and beating the likes of Darren Elkins and Chad Mendes. Volkanovski is a great striker, with excellent footwork and a good fight IQ. He will happily stand with opponents, often engaging in trades where his footwork, head movement and accuracy will see him come out on top. He’s exciting and worthy of a title shot after his huge TKO win over Mendes in a fight of the night winning bout. When talking about featherweights you have to mention one name. Jose Aldo. He was the long-reigning king of the division but many believed his time was up after big losses to Conor McGregor and Max Holloway who beat him on two occasions. Aldo had different intentions and instead put himself right back into title contention with a soul-stealing body shot TKO over Jeremy Stephens and a TKO over Renato Moicano. With two huge wins, Aldo has climbed right back to the top, the only issue was Max held the belt and he already beat Aldo twice in dominant fashion. With Holloway moving up, it seems like the perfect time for Aldo to reclaim what was once his and he couldn’t be more deserving of the opportunity. Aldo vs Volkanovski is such a tactical and high-level striking battle that feels like it could explode into a brawl at any moment with both fighters are known to stand and trade shots. It’s a fight I have to see take place. The winner would likely face the winner of Zabit vs Frankie Edgar in their first defence and from there the division will only grow in strength with a great balance of UFC veterans, new blood and exciting, fresh match ups.   Thanks for sticking with me for another edition of backseat matchmaker. Do you like the way I booked it or do you have a better idea? Let us know and get involved. Bye bye for now.

Yair Rodriguez cut from UFC according to Dana White

Yair Rodriguez has reportedly been cut by the UFC for refusing to take a fight. Rodriguez was riding the crest of a wave and was considered the big hope of Mexican MMA until he was heavily beaten by Frankie Edgar in May 2017. The UFC had tried to organise a fight between Rodriguez and Zabit Magomedsharipov for August at Barclays Centre and there were reports thus fight was a done deal however Rodriguez tweeted ‘#fakenews’. Rodriguez has also reportedly turned down a fight with number 7 ranked Ricardo Lamas. The LA Times are reporting Dana White has had enough and has sent a letter informing Rodriguez of the UFC decision. “The guy’s off a year, rejects a fight with Lamas and then doesn’t want to fight a guy below him in the rankings?” White said Thursday night. “He can go somewhere else. We have no use for him. “He calls that fight fake news. This is real news.” Rodriguez defeated BJ Penn in January 2017 in a one sided fight and big things were predicted for him. That is until he ran into Frankie Edgar. At 25, Rodriguez will not be short of offers however have the UFC been fair to him? The @latimes has learned that Yair Rodriguez has been cut from by the UFC for refusing to take the Aug. 4 Staples Center PPV fight against Zabit Magomedsharipov. — Lance Pugmire (@pugboxing) May 11, 2018 Told by @danawhite that if a fighter like Rodriguez turns down both Ricardo Lamas and Magomedsharipov, in what should have been a compelling battle, after taking a year off, he can take his act elsewhere. — Lance Pugmire (@pugboxing) May 11, 2018

An Idiots Predictions for UFC 211

Living up to the self-titled ‘idiot’ name, I correctly selected 1 out of 5 picks for UFC 210. But, like a young Frankie Edgar, I shall rise from this first knockdown and continue to blindly swing for the rafters… if I get knocked down again, I shall rise once more… even if I get knocked down a third time, I shall come back and win a decision, cuz I got HART. Just to recap, these picks aren’t based on deep analysis, statistics or even sanity, these are picks based on jovial ideas from a fan who loves the idea of the improbable. UFC 211 is the first blow-your-socks-off card of 2017. UFC 209 was threatening to blow my socks off, subsequent events made sure not only did my socks stay on, but over the course of the main event I actually reapplied all my clothing until I was fully dressed… something I find to be completely unnecessary during my UFC downtime (creep). Headlined by Heavyweight champ Miocic, the card takes place in his hometown Clev….Dallas, the card takes place in Dallas.  So lets make like funny twins and get twowit… lord that is bad…
