Contender Series Tidbits: Season 6 Week 3

Season 6 of Dana White’s Contender Series continues into its third week!

August 9th 2022 welcomes a further five bouts to the UFC Apex, including the first Women’s matchup of season 6.

Here is a tidbits snapshot for each of the Week 3 participants to whet the palate.

Bo Nickal (USA) v Zachary Borrego (USA)

Bo Nickal – Decorated collegiate wrestler Bo Nickal boasts a 120-3 NCAA record. 2-0 as an amateur, Nickal made his professional MMA debut at Jorge Masvidal’s iKON FC 3, June 3rd 2022; there, he stopped fellow debutant John Noland in just 33 seconds.

Zachary Borrego – Texas’ Zachary Borrego is having a sensational 2022. Debuting as a professional in February, “The Dragon” amassed a 3-0 record in just 141 days, entirely with Fury Fighting Championship; his DWCS bout comes just 185 days after his professional debut.

Paulo Renato Jr (Brazil) v Jamal Pogues (USA)

Paulo Renato Jr – An Inside Fighters’ League Heavyweight Champion, 10-1 Paulo Renato Jr enters Contender Series riding a 9-fight win-streak. Renato Jr has won his five most recent bouts via stoppage (4 TKO, 1 submission); it has been almost 6 years since the Brazilian last went the distance.

Jamal Pogues – A California Cage Wars Heavyweight Champion, Jamal Pogues boasts an 8-3 professional record. “The Stormtrooper” returns to Contender Series having featured in 2019; despite earning a unanimous decision victory over an undefeated Marcos Brigagão, Pogues fell short of a contract.

Erik Silva (Venezuela) v Anvar Boynazarov (Uzbekistan)

Erik Silva – A LUX Fight League Featherweight Champion, 8-1 Erik Silva won all four of his LUX Fight League bouts via first-round rear-naked choke. “The King” currently rides a seven-fight win-streak, a run that stretches back to 2016. The combined record of those seven opponents? 52-26-2.

Anvar Boynazarov – Making his professional MMA debut in December 2020, Anvar Boynazarov holds a 3-0 record, all via first round KO/TKO. A seasoned kickboxer, “The Uzbek” notably defeated UFC Featherweight Giga Chikadze via split decision in 2015, at Glory 23: Las Vegas.

Edgar Cháirez (Mexico) v Clayton Carpenter (USA)

Edgar Cháirez – A Combate Global Flyweight champion, 8-3 Edgar Cháirez won all eight of his professional victories via stoppage (4 KO/TKO, 4 submissions); six of those victories were inside the first round. A professional since 2016, ‘Pitbull’ has mostly fought with MMA promotion Combate Americas (seven bouts).

Clayton Carpenter – Holding a 5-0 professional record, unbeaten Arizonan Clayton Carpenter had a sensational 2021. After submitting 3-1 Nick Clem in 45 seconds at LFA 108, “Concrete” knocked out 5-2 Rodney Kealohi in just 13 seconds at LFA 119.

Sandra Lavado (Peru) v Karolina Wójcik (Poland)

Sandra Lavado – Never stopped as a professional, ‘Peruvian Zombie’ boasts a 10-2 professional record that includes one Kneebar and three Armbar submissions. Only Peruvian Karla Elizabeth Sanchez Lozano has defeated Lavado in a professional bout; once by unanimous decision, once by split decision.

Karolina Wójcik – Fighting out of Kraków, 8-2 Wójcik is an Extreme Fighting Championship Worldwide Strawweight Champion. Never finished as a professional, Wójcik’s two losses are both via split decision, including a close contest with current UFC Strawweight Cheyanne Vlismas in 2018.
