UFC fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Amanda Nunes defend her title against Julianna Peña, as the latter suffered a rib injury and is out of their scheduled UFC 289 fight. But fear not, as the UFC has announced that Mexican fighter Irene Aldana will step in to challenge Nunes for her bantamweight title.
Aldana, a former Invicta FC title challenger with an 8-4 record in the UFC, has won four of her last five fights with three of those wins coming by way of finishes. She most recently secured a first-round knockout of Ketlen Vieira in 2019.
Nunes, the current double champion of the UFC, is widely considered the top female fighter in the world. She’s coming off a unanimous decision win over Megan Anderson last March and will look to add another win to her impressive record of 22-5.
The bout between Nunes and Aldana will headline the UFC 289 pay-per-view event, which will be held on June 10 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. It’s sure to be a thrilling matchup between two top bantamweights, and fans can’t wait to see who comes out on top.
In addition to the Nunes-Aldana bout, the UFC 289 card will also feature a lightweight matchup between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush, which was postponed from its original date due to an injury suffered by Oliveira.
