UFC welterweight prospect Ian Garry has raised serious concerns regarding a potential matchup with Colby Covington, claiming that Covington is avoiding him. In a recent statement, Garry proceeded to label Covington a “liar” for his repeated assertions that he has not received an official fight offer from the UFC.
Having emerged as a promising contender in the welterweight division, Garry has actively campaigned for a showdown with Covington, even suggesting they were supposed to face off at UFC 303. Instead of Covington, Garry fought Michael Page and came away with a unanimous decision victory. Garry expressed his discontent with Covington’s lack of engagement, indicating that this absence of communication led the UFC to withdraw interest, subsequently booking him to compete against Page instead.
Garry theorised that Covington perceives him as a formidable threat and is opting for less risky bouts in order to maintain his relevance within the UFC. In a bid to further his case, he remarked on social media that he has indeed received a fight offer to face Covington, yet intriguingly did not disclose whether or not he accepted it.
The tension between the two fighters escalated further when Covington, during promotional interviews for his fight against Leon Edwards at UFC 296, made disparaging remarks about Garry and even involved Garry’s wife in his taunts. Covington called Garry a “liar” while reiterating that he had not received any legitimate offer from the UFC to square off against Garry. In a particularly controversial statement, Covington audaciously suggested that he wanted Garry’s wife to “get on her hands and knees” and plead for a fight, a remark that sparked outrage among fans and analysts alike.
Despite the personal jabs, Garry remains resolute in his desire to face Covington as the animosity between them intensifies. He has claimed that the personal attacks by Covington have only fuelled his motivation to compete against him.
Recently, UFC CEO Dana White hinted at the possibility of a Garry-Covington bout in the near future. White confirmed that Covington is being considered as one of the “few options” for Garry’s next fight, adding that the UFC is looking to finalise his next opponent soon. Covington, who has not fought since December 2023, boasts a concerning 2-3 record in his last five octagon outings and remains a contentious figure in the division.
As the drama unfolds, fans eagerly await news of whether Garry will finally get the opportunity to showcase his skills against Covington in the octagon, or if Covington will continue to dodge the confrontation Garry seeks.
