Aussie MMA Coach Arrested in the US for 24 Hours Over Visa Misunderstanding

Renato Suboti recently shared a wild story on social media—one that sounded like it came straight out of a movie. But this wasn’t fiction—it was real.

While traveling to the U.S., the Aussie MMA coach was detained by immigration officers due to a visa misunderstanding. Instead of a smooth trip, he spent 24 unexpected hours behind bars. What should have been a routine journey quickly turned into a stressful and shocking experience.

Australian MMA Coach Details His Harrowing Experience

The 33-year-old MMA coach from Australia shared the shocking story on Instagram after returning home. He said his trip to the U.S. turned into a nightmare.

He explained how everything spiraled the moment he landed in the U.S. Immigration officers pulled him aside and took him into a private room for questioning. Although he calmly explained his visit and cooperated fully, they claimed there was a problem with his visa.

“The officer interviewing me looked like he was looking for something wrong,” Suboti shared. He was shocked to learn he was going to jail even though he provided accurate information about his trip.

It turns out Suboti didn’t have the right documents or couldn’t give the answers the officials were looking for. That’s why the officers held him and sent him back to Australia on the next flight. The officials said it wasn’t personal—it was just the law.

The good news is that Subotic was released after 24 hours and sent back to Australia. Now, he’s considering taking legal action against U.S. authorities for what he describes as “inhumane treatment.”

He said that once the officers realized he was innocent, they saw he wasn’t a threat. Still, he’s upset about how he was treated and plans to speak with his lawyer about the 24-hour ordeal in the U.S. jail.

He Explains His Traumatic US Jail Experience

The head coach of the Australian MMA National Team described his time in the US jail as a terrifying experience. Without any explanation, they handcuffed him, threw him into a car, and sent him to federal jail.

Once there, things got worse. They took off his clothes and gave him a prison uniform. He saw chaos everywhere as they led him to his cell block—people were screaming, fighting over food, and running through the halls.

They then led Subotic to a blood- and urine-covered mattress and instructed him to put his belongings there. His nightmare didn’t end there. Subotic recalled a fight breaking out in his cell.

The MMA coach managed to get his stuff back, but the chaos didn’t stop. One person ran out of the cell, screaming, while other prisoners gathered to watch. The guards rushed in but said nothing. It was a disturbing and unsettling scene.
