McGregor’s Return Delayed? Why ‘The Notorious’ Might Skip White House for International Fight Week

The combat sports world has been bracing for the ultimate spectacle: Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return on the lawn of the White House. However, in a major admission that has sent shockwaves through the MMA community, the Irishman has revealed that his return to the Octagon may not take place on Donald Trump’s front lawn after all.

McGregor, a former two-weight world champion who hasn’t competed in professional mixed martial arts for nearly five years, was the heavy favourite to headline the UFC’s historic June 14th event. Yet, speaking this week, “The Mac” suggested a tactical shift in negotiations that could see him pushed back to July for the UFC’s traditional International Fight Week in Las Vegas.

“I am in negotiations with the Ultimate Fighting Championship about the bout, either the White House or thereabouts,” McGregor admitted. “Sometime in the summer, McGregor will return.”

A Departure from the Script

These comments mark a significant U-turn from McGregor’s previous rhetoric. Last year, appearing on Fox News, he was unequivocal about his participation in the June event. “The Mac is excited to be back,” he told viewers. “I’m on it (the White House card), this is me.”

The delay is particularly frustrating for fans who have been waiting for the culmination of his rivalry with Michael Chandler. The two coached against each other on The Ultimate Fighter two years ago, but injury and contract disputes have kept the matchup in limbo. McGregor reaffirmed his respect for Chandler this week, calling him a “good, tough guy,” but the venue for their clash remains the biggest question mark in the sport.

If Not Conor, then Who?

With McGregor potentially sliding to July, Dana White and the UFC hierarchy are reportedly pivoting to another “Mount Rushmore” level attraction for the June 14th spectacle. Former heavyweight king Jon Jones has emerged as the frontrunner to take the headlining slot.

Jones, who has never shied away from his patriotic leanings, recently confirmed he is also in deep negotiations for the White House slot. “I’m a very proud American, and I cannot wait to represent one more time,” Jones stated last week. The rumoured opponent for “Bones” is none other than the “Poatan” himself, Alex Pereira. A Jones vs. Pereira superfight at the White House would arguably be the biggest stylistic matchup in UFC history, potentially involving the Heavyweight and/or Light Heavyweight titles.

The Five-Year Itch

For McGregor, the stakes of this return cannot be overstated. By the time the summer rolls around, it will have been nearly five years since his leg-break injury against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. In that time, the Lightweight and Welterweight divisions have moved on significantly. While McGregor remains the biggest draw in the history of the sport, his ability to compete at the elite level remains the great unknown.

Negotiations with the UFC are notoriously complex, especially regarding McGregor’s lucrative contract and the logistical nightmare of a “White House” event. Whether he returns in June or July, the “Summer of Mac” is officially in motion—but the location of the party has never been more uncertain.
