Islam Makhachev successfully defended his Welterweight title at UFC 330 against Ian Garry in the main event. It was a close fight which saw Makhachev narrowly edge past the Irishman. Makhachev was able to score enough control time across the 25 minute bout to secure his record-breaking 17th consecutive win. The victory was Makhachev’s first defence of his Welterweight title.
Ian Garry was perhaps the hardest stylistic matchup of Makhachev’s career. Garry combines a well-rounded skill set with an extremely high fight IQ. Garry was able to outland Makhachev in multiple rounds however, Makhachev was able to use his grappling to win a hard-fought victory.
Islam has now secured a seat amongst the greatest in the history of the sport, being one of only 11 to hold belts in two different divisions and holding the consecutive win record. It is hard to see who can beat him however, in an always-stacked Welterweight division, there is no shortage of contenders.
In particular, Michael Morales and Carlos Prates seem the two most likely as of right now. Prates is on an impressive three-fight winning streak with two of those wins coming against former champions. He was able to provide two devastating losses for Jack Della Maddalena and Leon Edwards via KO. Two finishes against former champions will do no harm for his title aspirations. Prates provides a unique challenge for the champion, as he blends elite striking with devastating power. It is almost certain that Makhachev would have to use his grappling to win this fight.

Michael Morales sports an impressive undefeated 19-0 record. His last three fights have been particularly impressive with three round one KO wins against Neil Magny, Gilbert Burns and Sean Brady. Morales has a grappling background but his devastating striking has given the Ecuadorian his name. His huge 79 inch reach gives him a unique advantage over most fighters.
Islam Makhachev seems to be leaning towards a matchup against Carlos Prates. Speaking at the UFC Post Fight Show, Makhachev said “Shavkat is not fighting, Prates still fighting, still active. Morales also is good but I don’t remember last time he fight. If you ask who is more deserving, I think Carlos Prates.”
Makhachev has made it clear he wants to get back in the Octagon before the end of the year. Speaking at the post-fight press conference, he said “We have to fight before Ramadan, 100%. January, end of the year, we have to fight. I’m 34 years old, I have to fight as soon as possible. I’m not cutting much weight. I don’t have any big injuries. That’s it.” With Mackhacev’s willingness to get back in the Octagon soon, it is possible that we will see him face his next contender be announced soon.
