Stipe Miocic became the first man to defend the UFC Heavyweight Title 3 times and in doing so derailed the hype train.
Francis Ngannou labelled the next big thing, was incredibly game but Miocic was just too experienced, too rounded and just too good. Miocic got the decision, 50-44 on all three judges scorecards, which showed his dominance.
Ngannou has he said himself learned a lot in defeat and he will undoubtedly come again.
While still dangerous throughout the fight, once Miocic got through the opening round, Ngannou was less of a threat. The few times Ngannou landed something heavy, within seconds he found himself on his back. Ngannou was so exhausted that even touching gloves at the start of each round, seemed to empty the gas tank further.
Miocic deserves a lot of credit for the win, he’s criminally over looked and much like Amanda Nunes against Ronda Rousey, despite being the champion was playing second fiddle in the build up to the fight.
Ngannou lost little in defeat, he showed an amazing chin, lots of heart in staying in the fight and going the distance, but he showed flaws which will be hard to eradicate.
But hopefully now Miocic will get the credit he truly deserves.
