Dana White’s Contender Series was back last night for midweek action as ten more hungry fighters battled it out for a UFC contract.
The first to earn a contract was William Knight (8-1) who had a come from behind win against a tough opponent in Cody Brundage (5-1), Knight managed to overcome adversity to finish Brundage with strikes in the very first round with nasty ground and pound.
Second to earn a contract was gritty newcomer Ronnie Lawrence (6-1) who put together the perfect game-plan to earn a unanimous decision victory over sixteen fight veteran Jose Johnson (11-6) despite being one of the biggest underdogs on the card.
The final contract was awarded to submission ace Jimmy Flick (15-5) who submitted his opponent Nate Smith (6-1) in the third round with an arm-triangle choke. This was a grapple heavy affair which saw Flick constantly trying for submissions from the get go which may have broken the record for most attempted submissions in a Contender Series bout. Although Smith lost, Dana White was impressed with his submission defence and resilience and offered him to come back and fight on a future Contender Series bout in November.
Other fighters asked back after impressive performances were Melsik Baghdasaryan (5-1) after a main event unanimous decision victory over Longo-Serra team member Dennis Buzukja (4-2) and Tucker Lutz (10-1) after a unanimous decision victory over Chase Gibson (9-5).
