After last nights destruction of Jorge Masvidal, it is becoming harder and harder to not call Kamaru Usman the greatest welterweight of all time. Of course, when we talk about the greatest Welterweights of all time, most people are immediately drawn to George St. Pierre and understandably so. He dominated the division for years and beat some of the biggest names in the history of the welterweight division, but has it come time for a changing of the guard?
With his win last night Kamaru Usman extended his current winning streak to 18 fights, with his only loss coming in his second second-ever pro bout back in 2013. Since then he has beaten a who’s who of the Division with names like Raphael Dos Anjos, Leon Edwards, Colby Covington, Tyron Woodley and now for a second time Jorge Masvidal which leaves the question, Who is there left to conquer?
Usman holds a win over 4 of the top 5 in the division, with only Stephen Thompson yet to face the Champ, and he is unofficially set to take on the previous title challenger in Gilbert burns, which would almost certainly put him next in line, however, that is a big step to get over so to look ahead that far would be foolish. So who is next for Usman? it would seem that whoever he fights next is going to be a rematch with someone he has already beaten, with Colby Covington being the front runner. Covington last fought in September of 2020 in a dominant performance over Tyron Woodley, Who suffered a fight-ending rib injury in the 5th round. Given how back and forth their first fight was as well as the still prominent animosity between the two, a rematch would certainly be a huge fight.
However, Covington is certainly not the only fighter itching for another shot at a Usman rematch, with #3 ranked Leon Edwards voicing his desire for the next shot. Leon is scheduled to take on Nate Diaz at UFC 262 in a matchup that is mainly set on the name value that Diaz brings to the table, as he has not fought since 2019 and is currently not ranked in the top 15 of the division. It is not out of the question that with a big win over Diaz coupled with his already impressive win streak which dates back to his first bout with Usman, a rematch between those two has the potential to be a huge fight for fight fans around the world, especially here in the UK.
