Dana White, the UFC‘s president, has categorically rejected Paulo Costa’s request that the sport pay him more money for being a main event fighter.
The UFC middleweight contender recently took to Twitter to express his dissatisfaction with his present salary, before complaining about how much YouTubers make for their exhibition fights.
Costa refused to fight Jared Cannonier in August because he claimed the organization was underpaying him, prompting his tirade on Twitte.
‘Less than 350k is joke,’ Costa said in his social media rant. ‘UFC needs to pay me as main fighter to have fighting in main events. Youtubers are showing all disgrace on this business. Just to be clear. I never signed or locked up that contract. Why UFC announced this fight if didn’t signed? My question too.’
Logan Paul’s recent boxing exhibition match against icon Floyd Mayweather – an eight-round match with no winner or loser – made quite a sensation, with the YouTuber apparently set to earn in the region of $26 million (£14 million) after PPV figures and everything else were taken into consideration.
Costa’s protests were ignored by White, who pushed the 30-year-old to cancel his contract if he wasn’t happy, while also criticizing his ‘terrible’ last performance in September’s loss to Israel Adesanya at UFC 253.
He’s under contract,’ White told TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter. ‘I’m supposed to let people out of their contract just because they’re mad that YouTube kid is fighting and making money?
‘You should be happy for the kid, good for him. He put himself in a position to where he was able to fight Floyd Mayweather and make a bunch of money. You’re mad?
‘You just came off a ridiculous, horrible performance. Come back and put yourself in a position to do something big.’
‘You know what I say all the time, we have fights every weekend,’ the UFC president continued as he slammed Costa’s rant.
‘If you want to be busy, you can fight every weekend if you want to. Get out of your contract, and go do whatever you want to do.’
After the Brazilian cast the finger to UFC for failing to pay up, Kelvin Gastelum has been named as Costa’s replacement for the bout against Cannonier on August 21.
