Krystian Wojcik 0-0-0 is a Polish amateur Mixed Martial Artist currently competing in the Welterweight division, representing New Wave Academy. Krystian will be making his amateur debut at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on July 15th at Fightstar Championship 22.
I’d like to kick things off by thanking you for taking the time to speak to me today Krystian, and also to congratulate you on your upcoming inclusion in the Fightstar Championship 22 Card.
“Hi Aaron, thank you for inviting me for the interview.”
I hope training has been going well in the build-up to your scheduled debut in the cage?
“Yeah, so far the training’s been going good. Obviously, it’s had its ups and downs, but generally going well. Minor injuries throughout the camp but nothing too serious everything’s going well. Hopefully, it stays that way and we get to fight each other on Fightstar.”
Every athlete in your profession has that one teammate in the gym they call their partner in crime. That one person they just click with and aspire to make each other a better version of themselves. Is this the case for you at New Wave Academy?
“It’s hard to say, in New Wave Academy we all try to work together and help everybody out the best we can. Previously I would train with Jonas ‘The Octopus’ Grace, who you may remember winning the amateur Welterweight title at Fightstar 20. However, he’s now moved to New Zealand, so I don’t have that one particular person that I train with the most. I tend to just stick with everyone, heavy people, light people so I’m used to the style and the weight.”
On July 15th, you make your long-awaited amateur MMA debut, the 1st step is always the most exciting and to take your 1st walk at such a phenomenal organisation must be such an amazing feeling?
“It does feel good, it has been a bit of a hassle to find an opponent for me. I was supposed to fight a few times before this but due to pullouts and my broken rib it’s proved difficult.”
As previously stated, this will be your 1st Mixed Martial Arts bout. for the fans in attendance and our readers could you give us a little insight into what we all can come to expect from you?
“Yeah this is my first official fight, but I have completed a few competitions and tournaments so I’m looking forward to it. I dunno what I can expect from myself, I won’t give up easily. It all depends on what Luca will allow me to do.”
Each and every athlete in the fight game has a story to tell on how they entered combat sports. To give the fans a bit of insight leading up to what’s set to be a night of pure unadulterated organised violence at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, what first attracted you to the brutal yet exhilarating world of mixed martial arts?
“I started training a few years back but nothing major, I trained out of London Fight Factory it was a year or two until the confidence kicked in. I’ve always been a sporty person. You know gym, football I even tried rugby, athletes and all those sorts of things, I stayed in the gym the most. Eventually, I just got bored of it as I always had issues with injuries, shoulder, knee injuries and that so I just decided to give it a break. Then I started training at London Fight Factory, which was close to the college I was attending at the time. I started to get hooked, I didn’t train too hard over the first year, maybe twice a week, I treated it more as a hobby.”
In just over 2 weeks, many exceptional amateurs such as yourself will take centre stage on what’s set to be one of the biggest nights on the 2022 MMA calendar. You are set to take on Backstreet Dojo’s Luca Cumbo, hats off to Raj Singh and the Fightstar team, this one has to be one of the most exciting cards to date.
As you prepare to take the walk and put finishing touches to your game plan, have you taken some time to study Luca in the build-up to your scheduled meeting?
“Luca has only had one fight previously to this so I haven’t really got much to go on. I did see his fight though, I was right by the cage. I was supposed to be fighting him that night but as I mentioned, I broke a rib a few weeks before so I had to pull out. At first, I didn’t want to pull out, but in the weeks leading up to the bout, it wasn’t healing. Even when I was at the show it didn’t feel right so it wasn’t worth risking.”
Other than your inclusion on the night are there any matchups in particular that you’re looking forward to witnessing?
“Obviously I’ll be looking forward to seeing my teammates from New Wave Academy fight. But if I was to pick a fight out of the teams, it would probably be Dan McKeever and Kate Bacik’s fights. I haven’t seen Kate so that’s gonna be interesting to see, Dan’s a pretty cool guy, he fights pretty well. I like his boxing style so that’s gonna make a good show, these two I’ll be looking forward to apart from mine.”
