Kevin Lee, the former UFC interim lightweight challenger, has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts. The 30-year-old fighter made the announcement on social media following his recent submission loss to Rinat Fakhretdinov at UFC on ESPN 48.
Lee had a successful start to his UFC career, winning nine of his first 11 fights. However, he has since struggled, losing four of his last seven bouts. He was also cut from the UFC roster in 2021 before being re-signed earlier this year.
In his retirement announcement, Lee cited a number of factors for his decision, including a series of knee injuries and the death of his mentor and head coach, Robert Follis. He also said that he simply felt like it was time to move on.
“There’s more to life than fighting,” Lee said. “I’ve accomplished everything I’ve ever wanted to accomplish in this sport.”
Lee leaves the UFC with a record of 19-8. He is best known for his knockout victory over Gregor Gillespie at UFC 244 in 2019, as well as his decision wins over Edson Barboza and Michael Chiesa.
Lee’s retirement is a sad day for MMA fans, but it is also a sign of respect for his own health and well-being. He has had a long and successful career, and he will be remembered as one of the most exciting fighters of his generation.
