Adriano Moraes

Demetrious Johnson champion again

One Fc just concluded a massive night of fights as well as one of the biggest Muay Thai grand Prix of all time on Amazon. But all eyes were on the main event as Adriano Moraes was defending his title against the man many consider to be the greatest mixed martial artist of all time. This fight was a rematch from April of last year when Moraes knocked DJ out in the 2nd round. The fight itself was competitive as both fighters were evenly matched in skill, but the size difference was a different story. Fans of Mighty Mouse have gotten used to seeing the champ fight at 125, and this fight like all his other One fights has taken place at 135, with Moraes coming in a 5ft 8 and having originally missed his hydration test. It was evident that DJ was facing a man much larger than him, but then again when hasn’t he? There were times throughout the fight where Moraes nearly shocked the world again, like in the 2nd round when he landed a head kick that shook the then challenger causing him to engage in a desperation shot but would ultimately regain himself and keep fighting. Moraes used his size difference to take DJ down and hold top control while using his quick reflexes to catch DJ’s kicks and swept him, but the former UFC champ proved to be too much and far more relentless than many expected. While on his back Demetrious would be more active and threatening than Moraes, whose gas tank began to dip slowly but surely from the grappling exchanges. DJ landed elbows and strikes that cut Moraes open, as well as threatening with submissions and improving positions. Even though Moraes dominated the top control battle, his face was butchered and bloodied by the 3rd round. By the fourth, Adriano looked to be running on fumes while DJ looked fresh and ready for the championship rounds. For most of the round, both fighters exchanged kicks and some clinch work, suddenly DJ unleashed a straight right that looked like it was being shot out of a cannon which stung Moraes sending him reeling back into the cage which gave DJ the opening he was looking for and good night Irene, he landed a knee flush on Moraes and regained his crown. DJ returned the favor to the only man to ever KO him by ultimately ending him in a similar fashion. Many wrote Demetrious off and said the old man is past his prime, and in many ways, this fight was a version of what DJ experienced many years ago vs Dominic Cruz when he was outsized and outclassed by a larger opponent, but that was in 2011 and Demetrious is now amongst the GOATS. He showcased his skillsets and proved that he is still one of the most dangerous fighters in the world.

Three cross-event fights that could happen between UFC and One Championship

In terms of global outreach, popularity and revenue, the UFC is the premier MMA organisation in the world currently. With world class fighters stacked in each division, entertaining matchups are a very common occurrence. Despite fans of the UFC being provided with thrilling action week on week, cross-organisation fights could also provide great entertainment. One Championship CEO and Founder Chatri Sityodtong once commented “As I have always replied when asked the question by fans and media, I definitely would welcome a ONE vs UFC mega event with World Champion vs World Champion, It would create epic global shockwaves around the world.” Shared events could become a very real possibility in the future. One hindrance could be agreeing on a ruleset, as both organisations follow different codes. The benefits outweigh the negatives as the companies could generate great revenue and global coverage. Fighters would also gain more media coverage, could receive higher purses and test themselves against a bigger pool of fighters.  The fans would also benefit from events such as these, as they will witness more elite matchups across many different weight classes. Additionally, many fighters would be tempted take part. Below are three fights that would make sense to create if a “mega-event” was announced. 3. Deiveson Figueiredo vs Adriano Moraes (Flyweight) Figueiredo and Moraes are as evenly matched as you could get and would be a matchup that catches the attention of many. Both fighters are current flyweight champions in their respective organisation, and neither fighter has lost within the previous two years. Figueiredo has recently hit his stride, and Moraes recently defeated all time UFC great Demetrious Johnson.  Whilst there is a rematch scheduled between Figueiredo and Moreno at UFC 263, there is always a possibility that this matchup occurs. The only other mitigating factor is the weight difference of 10 pounds. If a cross-event occurs, it would make total sense to create a catchweight bout to see who comes out on top. 2. Derrick Lewis vs Arjan Singh Bhullar (Heavyweight) When it comes to heavyweights one thing is for certain, when they connect fighters drop. Both Lewis and Bhullar could create the perfect storm, and if they were to match up the possibility of making it to the final round would be slim. Both fighters in their previous five fights have won four times and lost once.  Whilst Bhullar is currently the One Championship heavyweight champion, Lewis has a victory over the current UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. It would be interesting to see how he attempts to navigate around Bhullars’ technical style. Who would come out on top, brute force or a more technical approach, we can only hope to see a fight like this soon.  1. Israel Adesanya vs Reinier De Ridder (Middleweight) The final fight includes both middleweight champions from each organisation. If Adesanya had defeated Jan Blachowicz, it would have meant both De Ridder and Adesanya would be multi-divisional champions. Both fighters have been cleaning up rosters, and with a combined record of 34 wins and just one loss, this fight should capture the imagination of any MMA supporter.  Stylistically each fighter has the weapons to counter the other. De Ridder enjoys most of his success by closing the distance and utilising his impeccable submission and ground game. Opposingly, Adesanya mostly maintains the perfect distance in order to utilise his world class striking. Would the “The Last StyleBender” be able to produce another highlight reel knockout, or could “The Dutch Knight” engulf Adesanya on the ground.  We can only hope that eventually cross-events occur, which would display the best talent each organisation has to offer. Whilst it seems a far-fetched concept now, this could be an option that promotes the sport of MMA and increases its global popularity further.

ONE FC 20 Gets A Bunch Of New Fight Additions

Lightweights Vuyisile Colossa and Caros Fodor will meet again in the cage of the Singapore-based One Fighting Championship, just nine months after their first bout. ONE FC added the 155-pound matchup to One FC 20 “Rise of the Kingdom”. South Africa’s Colossa used his superior striking skills to earn a unanimous decision against Strikeforce and UFC veteran Fodor when the pair met last December at One FC 13. Colossa has not competed since, while Fodor returned to the cage in May and righted his course with a first-round submission of Willy Ni. One FC announced a further three fights for the card with Arnaud Lepont vs. Suasday Chau, Ming Yen Sung vs. Radeem Rahman and Jian Kai Chee vs. Amir Khan. One FC 20 “Rise of the Kingdom” takes place September 12 from the Koh Pich Theatre in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
