Charles Oliveira Doesn’t Want “Chandler’s Place” in Case of a Win at UFC 309: “McGregor Is Not Our Goal”

Charles Oliveira will face Michael Chandler at UFC 309 on 16th November. The American was expected to be Conor McGregor’s next opponent but decided to stop waiting for the Irishman and move on with his career in the division. Does a win for the Brazilian mean “taking Chandler’s place” in a possible money fight against Conor? Not according to Oliveira’s coach, Diego Lima. “McGregor is not our focus right now; we always aim for the belt. We wouldn’t turn down the fight, of course, but we plan to fight for the belt in the summer of 2025, against Makhachev or Tsarukyan,” he revealed to the Brazilian website PVT. Although they are making plans for 2025, Charles and his team know they cannot overlook Chandler. The American is ranked 4th in the lightweight division, while Charles is ranked 2nd. In 2021, they faced each other, and for two judges, Chandler scored a 10-8 in the first round but ended up losing by TKO 19 seconds into the second round. “We knew Chandler starts the fight at a fast pace and that we would have to withstand the initial pressure. Charles held on; Chandler had given everything to win the fight in the first round and couldn’t handle Charles in the second. We’ll aim not to have the same scare in the next fight, win, and wait for the title shot,” said Lima, who pointed out the favourite for the likely fight between champion Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan. “I have a lot of respect for Arman; he deserves to be the next contender, even though Charles came closer to finishing the fight against him in three rounds. But there’s no way not to see Makhachev as the favourite.” Charles Oliveira vs Michael Chandler is the co-main event of UFC 309, which will have Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic as the main fight. The event will take place at Madison Square Garden, in New York.

Michael Chandler Claims McGregor’s Whiskey Drinking is a Marketing Tool

MMA superstar Conor McGregor is still keeping fans guessing over his UFC comeback, with doubts mounting after he was spotted drinking whiskey at recent events. McGregor is due to face Michael Chandler as part of The Ultimate Fighter, but a date has yet to be confirmed for the highly anticipated bout. Despite being out of action for two years, the Irishman has been training hard and confirmed that his comeback fight will take place against Chandler. However, while attending recent fights, including Gervonta Davis’ win over Ryan Garcia and BKFC 41, McGregor was seen drinking from his Proper Twelve whiskey bottle. UFC fans began to question whether his drinking habits would delay his return to the octagon. Chandler, however, believes McGregor’s drinking is just a clever marketing ploy to promote his new Irish Apple flavor of Proper Twelve whiskey. The former Bellator champion explained that McGregor is a master promoter and self-salesman who is simply building and staying in the public eye. Chandler is not worried about his rival’s behavior affecting his training, claiming that after a one- or two-month training camp, McGregor will still be in top form. “Whenever we fight if it is October, November then he has six-months minimum to clean things up so I am not worried,” he said during an interview with ESPN MMA. As for McGregor’s return date, that remains a mystery. The coaching stint for The Ultimate Fighter has already been filmed, but a date for the actual fight has yet to be announced. McGregor’s absence from the octagon has been a long one, and fans are eager to see him return. However, with doubts mounting over his drinking habits, it remains to be seen when he will make his highly anticipated comeback.

What’s next for the 155 pound division?

UFC 274 just delivered one of the most action-packed 1st rounds in lightweight championship history, this card that gave fans two title fights and names that would headline their own events. Yet no weight class was more impacted than the lightweight division, we saw several fights take place that will determine the future of the division as well as the careers of the 4 lightweights that competed that night.  Michael Chander (23-7) vs Tony Ferguson (25-7): Everyone knew this fight was going to deliver fireworks, but the ending to this fight still left everyone speechless. Michael and Tony battled it out during the first round with a mix of striking and grappling that is a customary thing in all of their fights, but in the second round, Chandler unloaded a front kick that made Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida stand up and clap. This win gives Chandler his second win since his debut last January (2-2) and puts him in a prime position to pick a money fight which he brilliantly did in his post-fight interview. Several fights would make sense here for Chandler, but ultimately we will have to see what the UFC decides. As for Ferguson this is his 4th straight loss in 2 years and sets him back like never before. At 38 years old he looked like his old self, but as they say, father time gets the best of everyone and after having been in wars or sustaining injuries for over a decade it looks like his body may be near the finish line. Prediction: Chandler vs Dustin Poirier, Tony Ferguson vs Dan Hooker Charles Oliveira (33-8) vs Justin Gaethje (23-4): If Charles had made weight we could very much have been talking about him like we do BJ, Khabib. This win would’ve been Charles’s second defence against another fighter who was supposed to run through him and while the fight itself was entertaining and had its back and forth “Do Bronx” showed that he was the better fighter. But what now? He’s technically no longer the champ, so who does he face? As for Justin he suffered yet another heartbreaking submission loss in a title fight, JG is in a weird spot in his career, one of the most exciting fighters of all time has consistently shown why he is ranked as the #1 challenger but is nearing gatekeeper status. But considering this is their first matchup JG still has the time to work himself back into contention.  Predication: Charles vs Islam, Gaethje vs RDA The other challengers:  #1: Gaethje #2: Poirier #3: Islam #4: Dairush #5: Chandler #6: RDA #7: Ferguson #8: Gillespie  #9: McGregor #10: Fiziev From this list #3 and #4 have been matched up for a while now but nothing has materialized, Islam was even passed over for a title shot when not accepting a last-minute fight vs RDA after the Dairush fight fell through and Bobby Green stepped in. Islam is the most logical choice due to his record and dominance. RDA is a man reborn and looking to get back into contention, a fight vs Gaethje would be fun. But as always you have the enigma Conor McGregor, #9 and out of commission for some time now, ranked #9 and winless since beating Cowboy, but man does that man know how to get the fights he wants. If we are thinking logically, he should face someone like #8, #7 or #6 and that’s being generous, in reality, he should be facing #10 or someone in the top 15, but we all know that’s not how the game works. Conor is likely to face Chandler or even the Champ, but considering he keeps hinting at a welterweight comeback we could see someone completely different. Last but not least we have the Diamond, the Louisianna fighter has not fought since December when he lost to the champ, but a fight vs Chandler would be a great comeback should he be available.

Unsettled Rivalries

Nate Diaz (20-13) vs Conor (22-6): As it stands Diaz vs Conor is deadlocked at 1-1 for each fighter. While Conor is still on the mend from his broken ankle, Diaz was last seen in action against Leon Edwards last June. No official word has been given on a date, but considering both fighters are on losing streaks, as well as maintaining a high level of animosity towards one another, one could make the argument that now is the time for #3. Also, let’s not forget that this is the most profitable and highest-grossing PPV MMA rivalry of all time. #1 sold 1.3 million PPV’s while #2 sold 1.6 million. Khabib Nurmagomedov (29-0) vs Tony Ferguson (25-6): This is the only rivalry on the list in which we never got to see either fighter compete against each other. I think at this point everyone has lost count of how many times fans were teased with this fight, only to have Tiramisu, TV equipment and injury after injury get in the way of what may have been one of the most competitive rivalries ever. While we will never get this fight back, we will always have memories of each fighter in their prime and what could’ve been.  Rampage Jackson (38-14) vs Wanderlei Silva (35-14): One of the oldest rivalries on this list, we have seen Rampage and Wanderlei lock horns since their pride days. More specific their first fight took place on November 9, 2003, then 2004, 2008 and 2018. While the rivalry started 2-0 for Wanderlei, Rampage was eventually able to enact his revenge during their last 2 fights and even the score. Both fighters are seemingly happily retired (Rampage may return to box), so we may never see the deciding fight, but as far as entertainment and living up to the hype this rivalry gave us 4 fantastic fights.  Brock Lesnar (5-3-1) vs Frank Mir (19-13): While this rivalry began with Frank submitting Brock in 1:30 seconds, the second fight saw Brock deliver what Joe Rogan called “Lunchboxes to the face” as well as dish out one of the worst beatings of all time (Future list), or how he called it “pulling a horseshoe out of Franks A** and beat him over the head with it”. While this was enough for some to say 3rd fight was unnecessary, I say give them 1 more and settle a rivalry that is 1-1.    Douglas Lima (32-10) vs Michael Page (20-1): Another rivalry that sits at 1-1, Lima and Page have yet to settle the score and face one another, especially after the way the 2nd fight ended. Both fighters have not fought since facing each other in October of last year, but seeing as their first fight ended via KO in favor of Lima and the second was a hometown decision for MVP, Bellator needs to set this trilogy up ASAP. MVP is set to face Yaroslav Amosov in May, but depending on the outcome a rematch vs Lima would be on point.  Shogun Rua (27-12) vs Lyoto Machida (26-11): A fight that for some reason never got its trilogy, we have Shogun and Lyoto tied at 1-1. Their first meeting took place during the “Machida Era” back in 2009 when Lyoto won a controversial UD, from there an immediate rematch was given and Shogun KO’d the Dragon in the 1st. Both fighters are closer to the end of their careers, have nearly identical records and fight for different organizations, but never say never as this is an OG Brazilian rivalry that needs a winner.  Michael Bisping (30-9) vs Luke Rockhold (16-5): While this rivalry sits 1-1 for each fighter on their official records, Bisping and Rockhold will argue that there were more fights that took place in the gym behind closed doors. While this rivalry started in favor of Luke (2nd round guillotine), eventually Bisping levelled things when he scored the biggest win of his career and KO’d Luke in the 1st. While both fighters are “technically” retired and Luke has been working his way back into competition stranger things have happened. Both fighters have seemingly made up and settled their differences while becoming training partners under the RVCA gym, I think it’s a safe bet that this is another unsolved rivalry.  Henry Cejudo (16-2) vs Demetrious Johnson (30-4): Another rivalry that we will never get clarity on will forever be remembered as a passing of the torch moment in the UFC. Henry and Mighty Mouse first met at very different points in their careers and DJ was able to impose his will on the very green Henry. From there Cejudo evolved into the fighter we all saw before he retired and was able to dethrone the seemingly unbeatable Johnson. DJ was eventually traded to One Fc in the Ben Askern deal, while Tripple C is a commentator and podcaster now (teasing his return). Eddie Alvarez (30-8) vs Michael Chandler (22-7): One of the best rivalries to come out of Bellator, Alvarez and Chandler put each other through hell as they battled twice and split the series 1-1. At the time of their first fight (2014), Eddie was a seasoned vet who was the Bellator lightweight champ, Chandler was an up and coming 9-0 prospect who submitted Alvarez in the 4th round, setting up a rematch 2 years later which saw Eddie win a split decision. After Eddie went to the UFC where he would become champ, Chandler would also eventually win gold for Bellator but joined the UFC 4 years after Eddie left. Considering where each fighter is in their careers, this feels like another rivalry that will never get its conclusion.  Stipe Miocic (20-4) vs Francis Ngannou (17-3): What may be the rivalry for the greatest UFC heavyweight ever, we have seen both fighters score wins over each other. While Francis may have the more terrifying victory, Stipe still is one of only 2 men to hold a win over Francis (Derrick Lewis). Francis defended his title against Gane in January and suffered a knee injury
