Valentina Shevchenko TKO’s Jessica Andrade

And Still. Valentina ‘Bullet’ Shevchenko remains the undisputed UFC flyweight champion, knocking out arguably, on paper at least, the sternest challenge to her throne in the form of former strawweight best, Jessica Andrade. The two fighters met in a women’s flyweight bout on Saturday night (April 24, 2021) at the UFC 261 pay-per-view event from Jacksonville, Florida at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. Andrade as riding a four-fight win streak with victories over Claudia Gadelha, Tecia Torres, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Rose before losing her previous bouts when she dropped the women’s strawweight title to Weili Zhang at UFC Shenzhen from the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. She then dropped a decision loss in a rematch against Rose Namajunas at UFC 251. She rebounded with a TKO win over Katlyn Chookagian in October 2020. The second round saw a quick body lock takedown for Shevchenko. Andrade was getting rag-dolled and out-classed everywhere. Andrade tried her best to lift the champion to get a slam, but Valentina denied all of her advances and then put Jessica on her back. Shevchenko locked up a mounted crucifix and started to punch and elbow away at the face of the challenger until the referee said to stop.

Valentina Shevchenko: A detriment to the UFC women’s flyweight division?

It is not often in the sport of MMA that a fighter comes along who is so talented that they quite simply make the rest of the division look like amateurs in comparison. This was the case with the likes of Demetrious Johnson on his historic 11 fight title reign at men’s flyweight, where it seemed that the rest of competition was years behind in skill level. His level of greatness was never truly recognised amongst most fans – especially amongst the more casual fans – and he left the UFC with very little notoriety for ONE championship after only one razor-thin split decision loss to Henry Cejudo in 2018. Johnson’s dominance over the division certainly wasn’t the only reason for his lack of recognition amongst the fans – the men’s flyweight division has long been seen as the least the entertaining weight class in the UFC – but a clear lack of any true challenge for the champ certainly removed any intrigue going into most of his title bouts. This could seemingly be a problem regarding the current women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko. The aptly named ‘Bullet’ hailing from Kazakhstan is by far one of the most complete and dominant fighters that the sport has ever seen, especially after the UFC created a natural weight class for her in 2017. Shevchenko had already beaten every opponent she faced in the weight class above, bantamweight, bar the current champion, Amanda Nunes, in two close title bouts. Since becoming the champion by defeating Joana Jedrzejczyk for the vacant title at UFC 231, there has been no close competition for the champion. In her first title defence against Jessica Eye, she obliterated Eye with a spectacular head kick only 26 seconds into the second round after a dominant showing up to that point. She has since defended the title twice since then and been shown no resistance against opponents in the already shallow talent pool of a division. It does then beg the question – does Shevchenko’s dominance remove any intrigue from upcoming title bouts? She is scheduled to take on Jennifer Maia at UFC 255 and most see this fight as a forgone conclusion. The Las Vegas odds certainly do – Shevchenko sits as a staggering -1100 favourite for the bout. Whilst it can be interesting to see how Valentina will dispatch her opponents in upcoming bouts, it doesn’t exactly create fresh matchups for division and it doesn’t seem like it will be long before the ‘Bullet’ has wiped out any potential contender that the division has to offer. There aren’t many solutions to this issue – unless a new up and coming talent emerge in the division to challenge Shevchenko. The UFC could book Shevchenko against Nunes for a third time in a bout that most would consider the best competitive matchup for the flyweight champion, but the the issue still remains when she returns to the division. The division is in danger of stagnating entirely, and I believe that once all plausible contenders for the champion have been tested and 125 lbs, we could see Dana White do what he planned to with men’s flyweight. Dissolve the division entirely.

Joanna Jedrzeczyk vs Valentina Shevchenko to meet for Flyweight title

Joanna Jędrzejczyk  (15-2) and Valentina Shevchenko (15-3) have been scheduled to clash at UFC 231 for the vacant Flyweight title. Shevchenko was supposed to compete for the title against former champion Nicco Montano (4-2) in the co-main event spot of UFC 228. At UFC media day Shevchenko told reporters she still believed Montano would pull out of the fight and her predictions come true when Montano was admitted to hospital and withdrew from the fight due to health issues arising from weight cutting complications. Montano had earned the Flyweight strap by competing in TUF 26. On her route to the title, she defeated Lauren Murphy, Montana De La Rosa, Barb Honchak and Roxanne Modafferi, picking up unanimous decision victories in each of the match-ups. In the aftermath of her late withdrawal from UFC 228 Montano, the inaugural Flyweight champion was stripped of her belt, without making a single defence. Shevchenko a two-time title challenger at Bantamweight, holds an impressive resume, with wins over Holly Holm and Juliana Pena .on her record. In February of this year, she dropped down to 125lbs and looked immaculate doing so, dismantling her opponent Priscila Cachoeira on route to a second-round submission victory for which she earned performance of the night. Jędrzejczyk ruled the 115lbs division from 2015 until late last year, defending her belt on five separate occasions. However back to back defeats to Rose Namajunas have left Jędrzejczyk in a difficult position in the Strawweight division. Despite returning to winning ways by outpointing Tecia Torres in July the former champion appears unlikely to be able to force a trilogy fight with the new Strawweight queen anytime soon. With one door closing another one opens as she has gotten the call for UFC 231. Opportunity knocks for Jędrzejczyk to become a two-weight world champion, the first in the history of the UFC women’s divisions. The two fighters will compete on December 8th 2018 in Toronto, however, it will not be the first time the two fighters have fought. Both  Jędrzejczyk and Shevchenko competed on the Muay Thai circuit, meeting each other on three occasions, with Shevchenko the victor in each of the contests, the last of which was over 10 years ago. The fourth bout under MMA rules promises to provide an absorbing, high quality and high stakes striking match-up. UFC 231 represents a true mega-fight between two of the best women to ever compete in the sport. Whilst also providing the opportunity for one of the combatants to establish themselves as queen at 125lbs and announce the Flyweight division as one to watch.

Nicco Montano vs. Valentina Shevchenko in the works for UFC Calgary main event

It’s official – the Ultimate Fighting Championship is making it’s long-awaited return to Calgary. The UFC made its debut in the city back at UFC 149 which was headlined by an interim bantamweight championship between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao back in 2012. Six years later, the promotion will make another appearance on July 28th. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani has reported the UFC are targeting a flyweight title match up between reigning champion Nicco Montano and former bantamweight title challenger – Valentina Shevchenko. Montano became the inaugural champion in December after defeating Roxanne Modafferi at the Ultimate Fighting 26 finale with many fighters from both strawweight and bantamweight eyeing up a move to 125lbs. The division seems like a match made in heaven for Shevchenko who challenged Amanda Nunes for the bantamweight strap at UFC 215 but fell short. She made her successful debut in the flyweight division against Priscila Cachoeira in February in one of the most one-sided beatdowns in MMA history. Also featured in the Calgary card is Jose Aldo’s return to action against the surging Jeremy Stephens. It will be the first UFC fight in Aldo’s career that is not the main event or a title fight.
