Finally, we seem to have some clarity on the future of the UFC lightweight title.
Dana White told the Los Angeles Times: “As soon as one punch is thrown, it’s on for the full title, and it’s only fair,” White said “They’ve both worked their way up to No. 1 and No. 2. They deserve a shot.”
While it does clear things up, and Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 in April, will quite rightly fight for the undisputed lightweight title once their fight begins, but the question why has it taken so long and why not just strip McGregor right now.
I hear the theory that the reason the UFC is waiting is that they don’t want a vacant title if either Khabib or Ferguson pulls out again, but is that really a reason to not strip McGregor of his title right now?
Surely if the UFC is worried that the fight won’t happen, they have a plan B and have someone else ready to step in.
The issue should be, should McGregor keep his title? Having not defended his belt since he won it in November 2016 from Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, and more importantly not showing any indication that he intends to do so in the near future, that in simple terms, it should be that McGregor is stripped, and stripped now.
I seriously doubt any other fighter in the UFC would have got away with not defending his belt for this long, and remember unlike others, Dominick Cruz for example, McGregor is not injured, he just won’t fight, that’s the difference.
I think McGregor just wants to pick and choose when and who he fights next, be it Nate Diaz, GSP or whoever, he doesn’t want to or understand as a champion you have obligations to fight the leading contenders.
