The UFC confirmed this week that Curtis Blaydes (10-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) will meet Alistair Overeem (43-16 MMA, 8-5 UFC) at UFC 225, taking place on June 9 at the United Centre in Chicago. No main event has been confirmed for UFC 225 but this fight will slot nicely onto the main card.

Blaydes played it smart in his last outing, beating Mark Hunt with a unanimous decision over the seasoned veteran who throughout the fight looked to land that one punch and then walk away. However, Blaydes outwrestled Hunt, implementing his game-plan with ease, although not the most entertaining fight it got Blaydes what he wanted the #5 ranking and a fight with #2 Overeem in his hometown of Chicago.
Blaydes only loss in the UFC is to Overeem’s previous opponent Francis Ngannou, every fight since we’ve seen a better version of Blaydes who at 25 still has a long career ahead of him. This will be his final fight on his current UFC contract so will be a great way for him to make a statement and look to recoup the financial rewards.
Overeem hasn’t been a slouch either, riding a two-fight win streak until Ngannou knocked him out in devastating fashion. A highlight he would have undoubtedly seen over and over again if he watched the build-up to the Stipe Miocic vs. Ngannou fight. Looking for one more chance at gold and a rematch with Miocic, Overeem will have a lot to prove in his comeback fight.
