Derrick Lewis to face Ciryl Gane for Interim Heavyweight Title

Derrick Lewis will square off against Ciryl Gane at UFC 265 on August 7th for the Interim Heavyweight Title.

According to Brett Okamoto for ESPN the UFC attempted to book a fight between Champion Francis Ngannou and Derrick Lewis for June. It was then tried again for August 7th, but Ngannou advised the UFC he would be unavailable to defend the title at that time.

The newly scheduled event comes off the back of Ciryl Gane defeating Alexander Volkov via decision at UFC Vegas 30. White explained that the reason for the matchup is because he believes both men are deserving of a title fight.

Derrick Lewis last fought in February where he knocked out Curtis Blaydes in the second round.

The introduction of an heavyweight interim title has left the MMA community simply asking ‘why?’

What do you make of the introduction and the matchup? Necessary or not needed?
