Tom Wright – “I don’t refuse fights.”

Tom Wright 3-4-0 is an English amateur Mixed Martial Artist currently competing in the Bantamweight division. An amateur competitor since 2017, representing Manchester Predators. He has competed for Budo Fighting Championship, Cage Warriors, UKFC and is due to make his debut for Full Contact Contender on June 25th.

I’d like to start things off by thanking you for taking the time to speak with me again today Tom, and also to congratulate you on your upcoming inclusion to the FCC 29 card.

I hope training has been going well in the build-up to your highly anticipated return to the cage?

“Yeah mate, training has been going good. Looking forward to getting back in there.”

Last we saw you in action was back at the absolutely stacked UKFC 18 card. Despite an absolutely valiant effort on the night, you fell to a split decision vs Jack Axworthy.

Now the proverbial dust has settled and you’ve had time to reflect on your barn burner of Bantamweight title inclusion, what did you take from the showdown with Jack?

“It was a great fight with Jack, he’s a talented lad and it was a good experience. I took a lot away from that fight, mainly the fact I know I can push the pace for five rounds. I believe with a couple of minor adjustments I’d have won that fight, as it was already super close.”

With the decision as close as it can be in the cage, If the opportunity arises, would you run it back with Jack in the not so distant future?

“Sure I’d run it back, it was a super fun fight and I believe I’d be able to get the win if we fought again. But I don’t think it’s likely to happen, I wish him the best on his journey.”

Throughout your career you have prospered both inside and outside the cage, most recently being cornerman to Megan Morris in her bout at Ares FC 6 in Paris. In regards to roles in the MMA World, where do you feel most at home?

“I enjoy doing the corner for my teammates, especially that last one in Paris with Megan as the show was incredible. Although I do get nervous for my close friends when they’re fighting, there’s just no feeling like standing across the cage from someone who’s going to try and take your head off. So yeah, I feel most at home when it’s me in there and I can control what’s going on in there a little bit.”

It’s Been 3 months since that epic night in Preston and already fans will get to witness you back in action. Another Bantamweight gold opportunity has been announced for June 25th when you take on Connor Walsh.

Your fans know you to be one never to take an easy fight when receiving the call from Adam Teh and his team at FCC to take on one of the UK’s finest prospects, was it an offer you couldn’t refuse?

“They offered me a different fight for the belt first to be honest, but then a week or so later came back with Connor Walsh. But yeah I don’t refuse fights, so when they came back with Connor I was all for it.”

The FCC’s current Flyweight Champion takes a step up in division to compete with yourself, currently one of the UK’s well-noticed amateurs.

What do you make of Connor in the build-up to your scheduled meeting at FCC 29?

“He’s a super talented fighter who mixes things up really well. He’s got good striking but I believe he’ll be looking to try and take me down and hold me there. All respect to the lad but I believe my pressure and takedown defence will be too much for him on the night.”

In regards to training, have you taken it to a higher level as you prepare for your 2nd title opportunity of the calendar year?

“I always train as hard as possible for every fight, I just make minor adjustments in my training depending on the style of fighter I am facing.”

With June 25th fast approaching, many extraordinary athletes are set to take centre stage on Full Contact Contender’s 29th card to date. I’m personally looking forward to the return of Azi Thomas as he sets to take on Matthew Camilleri for the FCC Flyweight title, fire written all over it.

Other than your inclusion on the night are there any matchups in particular that you’re looking forward to witnessing?

“There are so many top fights to look forward to besides mine. The one you mentioned is one of them. I’ve sparred with Matt a couple of times in this camp and believe me, he’s a beast. My teammates Chris & Christian are waiting on matches so them two if they get fights. Ben Petches-Kelly vs Will Haycox & Lewis McGrillen vs Jamie kelly are belting fights. And although he’s a teammate of my opponent, I always like watching Kurtis Campbell fight, so I’ll be looking forward to that one too.”

I wish you all the best for the 25th Tom and I hope the rest of your preparations go smoothly, I look forward to witnessing you out there.

Last but not least do you have a message for the fans that will be in attendance and anybody you’d like to give a shout-out to?

“The only real message is to make sure you buy a ticket for this one. I always come to scrap and I’m never involved in a boring fight and this one will be no different.”
