UFC 278 Usman vs Edwards preview

A rematch nearly 7 years in the making will take place this Saturday night in Salt Lake City Utah, as the P4P king and welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will try to defend his belt for a 6th consecutive time against #2 ranked welterweight Leon Edwards.

For the champ, this is a test that he has already passed once, but that was in 2015 and Leon is now a different animal (9 fight streak). Many believe that he will steamroll the British fighter and leave him like the rest of his opponents, bloody and broken. While no one can deny the talent and dedication that Kamaru puts into his craft, the fact that he seems to have his eye on multiple things like boxing Canelo, and fighting at 205 does raise some questions in my book. There have been many champs who looked invincible but the minute they took their eye off the prize we have seen what happens. Leon seems to have the dog mentality at the moment and is looking more focused and ready than ever before, we have seen underdogs pull off insane upsets and in MMA one never knows what to expect.

All eyes will be on the main event. However, there are several high-profile matches that are also set to take place. The co-main event pits a former world champ in Luke Rockhold vs a former title contender who many considered to be the future of the middleweight division. Both fighters are riding unfortunate 2 fight-losing streaks, with Rockhold having been away since 2019. While this fight holds no title implications that we know of, it will still determine the careers and futures of 2 prominent fighters.

In a strange way, the fight between Jose Aldo and Merab Dvalishvili has not garnered much attention, if at all. This is the only fight on the main card that has any future title shot implications, as both fighters are in the top 10, as well as sporting a 3-fight win streak for Aldo and a 7-fight streak for Merab. The fight is also the quintessential striker vs grappler matchup and we will see if the former champ still has one last title run or if the rising contender will get his big break.
